Dr. David Rosner is an optometrist at Chesapeake Eye Care and Laser Center who graduated from the Pennsylvania College of Optometry. He is heavily trained in ocular disease and emergency care and he has given case report presentations on pertinent clinical findings. Additionally, he is well experienced in pre- and post-operative management and contact lens fittings. He begins seeing patients in July 2023.

Macular Degeneration
Macular degeneration is the leading cause of severe vision loss in Americans over the age of 65. Macular degeneration causes a deterioration or breakdown of the macula, the small area of the retina that allows one to see fine details clearly. When the macula deteriorates, the central vision becomes blurred, hindering the ability to read or drive. This disease is not painful and many people who are diagnosed, especially in the early stages, are able to lead productive lives.

Prior to joining Chesapeake Eye Care, Dr. Chang attended the University of Maryland School of Medicine where he graduated cum laude. After completing his medical degree, Dr. Chang continued his training with an internship in internal medicine at Mercy Medical Center, his residency in ophthalmology at the Medical College of Georgia and a fellowship in glaucoma at University of Maryland.

We use several methods to assess proper ocular motility or eye movements such as: do your eyes move together? Strabismus is a common childhood motility problem, but misalignment can occur in adults too. Patients with thyroid disease or orbital trauma can often have ocular motility problems.
Diabetic Retinopathy
Diabetic retinopathy is a disease that results from diabetes. It can damage blood vessels inside the retina and result in vision loss. The disease usually affects both eyes. Any patient with type 1 or type 2 diabetes is at risk. There are two types of diabetic retinopathy: nonproliferative (or background) and proliferative. Many diabetics have the milder nonproliferative type that usually does not affect vision. The proliferative type is more severe and occurs when new blood vessels grow on the surface of the retina. It often results in the sudden onset of floaters when the abnormal vessels bleed into the vitreous cavity of the eye.

Ultrasound
The surgeon makes an incision and uses ultrasound waves to break up the hard, yellow proteins that form the cataract, leaving the lens membrane in place.
Radiation Therapy
Thyroid eye disease usually occurs as a result of Graves disease, or hyperthyroidism, but it can also affect hypothyroid or euthyroid patients. Infiltration of the muscles and tissues surrounding the eye can cause poor eye movement, proptosis (bulging of the eyes), malpositioned eyelids and sometimes vision loss. The most common sign of thyroid eye disease is eyelid retraction. Management of patients with this disease is often multidisciplinary and includes endocrinologists, internists, strabismus surgeons, ophthalmologists and oculoplastic surgeons. Patients experiencing severe sight-threatening progression of the disease often require high-dose steroid treatment, radiation therapy or surgery to decompress the eye and preserve sight. Patients may also require surgery to straighten the muscles that move the eye and eyelid. A new medication, TEPEZZA®, is now available to improve the signs and symptoms of Thyroid Eye Disease.

Reconstructive Surgery
Chesapeake Eye Care and Laser Center offers an extensive range of cosmetic, corrective and reconstructive surgery of the eyelids and surrounding areas. Located in our state-of-the-art facility with a private surgical suite, the cosmetic team is led by Dr. Orin Zwick, one of the area’s most highly regarded oculoplastic surgeons. Dr. Zwick is a board-certified ophthalmologist whose specialty is cosmetic and reconstructive surgery of the structures surrounding the eye. He is one of fewer than 650 surgeons in the United States to complete a full fellowship devoted entirely to eyelid and orbital surgery.

Plastic Surgeons

Botox
Botox helps soften lines and creates a refreshed appearance by relaxing muscle movement. As we age, we begin to develop more wrinkles and creases around the eyes, forehead and mouth. This is often the result of a breakdown in collagen and elastin fibers beneath the facial surface. Squinting, frowning, smiling, exposure to sun and smoking contribute to creation of these lines. Botox has become one of the most popular and effective treatments to reduce lines, prevent new ones and give patients a more youthful appearance. It is carefully injected directly into the muscles of the targeted area, such as the forehead, between the eyebrows (glabellar lines) and around the eyes (crows feet), in an outpatient procedure that takes just a few minutes. Results are visible within four days and the effects typically last three to four months. Dr. Zwick, our oculoplastic surgeon and award-winning “Top Doc,” carefully evaluates each individual’s appearance and performs all injections.
Brow Lift
Frequently, droopy eyelids are related to the upper eyebrows. As the face ages, the brows tend to droop and weigh on the upper eyelid area. If the problem lies in the brow, a brow lift may be the recommended procedure. There are various approaches to raising the brows, including a direct brow lift, a transblepharoplasty brow lift or a trichophytic brow lift. With the trichophytic brow lift, the incision is made just behind the hairline and tissue of the scalp and forehead are lifted. The brow tissues are resuspended upward, resulting in rejuvenation of the upper eyelids, a decrease in crow’s feet formation and a more awake, refreshed appearance. This type of brow lift is best for patients who wear bangs and have a higher forehead so the incision can be hidden. Transblepharoplasty brow lifts can be performed in conjunction with upper eyelid surgery to help stabilize and support the brow. Direct brow lifts are typically recommended for men with bushy eyebrows and deeper forehead lines since the incision is made just above the eyebrow hairs.

Blepharoplasty
Over time, the thin layer of skin that surrounds the eyes may sag. This often results in making one appear tired and older. The drooping skin may also interfere with the field of vision. To recapture a refreshed, youthful appearance, and ensure full peripheral vision, an eyelid lift, also known as blepharoplasty, may be performed to remove excess skin from the upper eyelids, lift sagging eyelids, or address fatty pockets and excess skin under the eyes. A blepharoplasty may be performed alone or in conjunction with other procedures to achieve rejuvenation of the periocular region and improve a patient’s field of vision.

Skin Cancer
Eyelid lumps and bumps come in all different varieties. They can be inflammatory lesions such as styes or chalazions, benign growths such as cysts, moles, keratoses or skin tags, or malignant cancers such as basal cell carcinoma, squamous cell carcinoma or melanoma. Because of the delicate nature of the eyelids, careful evaluation by Dr. Zwick is required to determine the type of lesion and recommended management. Often, if the lesion is felt to be benign, Dr. Zwick can perform an in-office excision. Sometimes a biopsy will be performed to determine the exact pathology.

Dr. Orin M. Zwick is an Oculoplastic Surgeon who joined Chesapeake Eye Care and Laser Center in 2006. His specialty is Oculoplastic and Reconstructive Surgery. Dr. Zwick performs surgery of the eyelids and eyebrows when there is drooping skin or weak muscles, eyelid malpositions including lids turning inward or outward, and removal and repair of benign or malignant eyelid lesions. He also treats tear duct (lacrimal) problems that can cause watering eyes or infections, difficulty closing eyes from problems such as facial nerve palsy, spasms of the eyelids, orbital inflammatory problems such as thyroid eye disease, orbital fractures and orbital tumors. He also performs non-surgical cosmetic enhancements such as Botox® injections and dermal facial fillers.
