Family Practice
My journey to acupuncture began with my own health issues.Â Since I was graced with neck pain and migraines, those same conditions, encountered dailyÂ in my family medicine practice, held a particular interest for me.Â To treat them effectively, I learned about trigger points and myofascial pain, and was stunned by the dramatic response of my patients to trigger point injections.Â The results went way beyond the physical; while it is natural to feel happy after pain relief, it was clear that the emotional shifts I was witnessing went deeper that.Â

Dr Haller’s other interests include painting, collage, many other forms of art, gardening, yoga, cooking and hiking.Â She also works for the San Francisco Department of Public Health at Tom Waddell Health Center in the Tenderloin doing urgent care.Â She lives in Berkeley with her partner Murray, and other members of their multi-generational family and animals.

Endometriosis
Ust because you cannot remove them from the body to examine as you can the arteries or nerves, do not think that acupuncture meridians lack biological reality! Â Current understanding is that they are the manifestation of energy flow along the paths of least resistance between planes of fascia, a connective tissue. Connective tissue is so important in the development of pathology and dysfunction because it can become literally stuck, as it does in frozen shoulder, whiplash or adhesions from endometriosis or surgery. With this in mind, you can see there is overlap between what occurs during traditional acupuncture treatment, which aims to facilitate the movement of blood and Qi in these channels, and the physical medicine treatments that seek to do the same through manual manipulation using modern or ancient means. (Myofascial release and Graston technique are suspiciously similar to ancient practices of tui na and gua sha.)
Pelvic Pain
Chronic pelvic pain is a challenging disorder, with various combinations of urological, gynecological, musculoskeletal, neurological, inflammatory and emotional factors all contributing to pain and dysfunction that can be truly disabling.
Labor and Delivery
Chronic pelvic pain is a syndrome that is being diagnosed with increasing frequency in both woman and men.Â Â It may begin as the result of endometriosis, gynecological infections or pelvic trauma from childbirth in women, and prostatitis or epididymitis in men.Â Â Urinary tractÂ infections, interstitial cystitis, anal fissures and hemorrhoids, or trauma from surgery may lead to chronic pelvic pain.Â Â A fall on the coccyx, low back or abdominal strain may be a precipitating event and repetitive injuries from running, cycling and horseback riding may play a role.Â

Psychiatry
Dr Haller was born in Brooklyn New York.Â She graduated form Upstate Medical Center in Syracuse, NY in 1980, and did her residency training at San Francisco General Hospital/UCSF in Psychiatry and Family Medicine. Â She returned to New York in 1984 to teach in, and eventually direct the Family Medicine Residency Program at Lutheran Medial Center in Brooklyn, NY. Â She also completed a fellowship in Urban Family Health, and the Geriatric Teaching Program at Mt Sinai Hospital. Â Dr. Haller was board certified in Geriatric Medicine in 1990.Â During her academic career, she developed courses on cross-cultural and psychosocial aspects of family medicine, and geriatric psychopharmacology.

Sciatica
Percutaneous electrical nerve stimulation is an acupuncture-like treatment for chronic pain developed by William Craig, MD in the 1970â€™s, that has been shown to be effective for low back pain,Â sciatica, trigeminal neuralgia and diabetic neuropathy, among other conditions. It involves placement of needles at appropriate levels on either side of the spine to stimulate a change in the nerves that carry pain and other signals from an affected area of the body (neuromodulation). Needle placement is determined by position of the nerves (rather than by traditional acupuncture points), and needles are connected in specific circuits and stimulated at a series of frequencies over a course of treatment. Many medical acupuncturists use variations on the Craig PENS procedure in conjunction with other techniques to create a multilayered electro-acupuncture treatment. It should be pointed out that though this procedure bears obvious similarity to acupuncture, the developers of PENS themselves do not actually consider this procedure to be acupunctures

Though athletic and relatively fit, I’ve suffered with stuck hip flexors, an aching lower back, and what I thought was some kind of pinched nerve in my upper back for years…But my first visit to Dr. Marsha Haller resolved my worst lumbar issue immediately. My chronic muscle pains and numbness subsides with every visit. Thanks to Dr. Haller, I feel my body returning to the limber, relaxed state it enjoyed before these injuries took their toll.

Â Physical therapy is a mainstay of treatment for myofascial pelvic pain. Nevertheless, Â when manual techniques are unable to unlock trigger points or other restrictions in the pelvic floor and related areas of hip, back and abdomen, dry needling of trigger point s in the involved muscles has become important addition to the treatment.
