Comprehensive Examination
Remember to have fun getting creative with new ideas as we take a look at a few different activities that come to mind. If your schedule allows, take just 30 minutes out of your day to play with your dog, better yet, take him or her for a walk on their leash or harness outside. I’m sure they will be excited about going outside and taking in all the fun sights and smells! Let’s not forget about our feline friends either. I know that my cat, Jinx, simply cannot resist chasing a laser pointer or feathery toy around the house! Even if you can take 20 or 30 minutes out of your day to spend playing or exercising with your pets, the effort is certainly worth it! Parasites Treatment and Control
The second thing to keep in mind is your pet’s need for protection from parasites and diseases. As soon as you walk out the door, you encounter possibilities for your pet to become host to a plethora of tiny pests and parasites. Fleas, ticks, and other external parasites can range from slightly annoying to difficult and expensive to treat. Even though preventatives are not 100% fool proof, you may all the more be playing roulette with the infectious disease agents that external parasites can carry if your pet is not on a monthly flea and tick preventative. In addition, your pet will be subjected to discomfort and trauma if they contract parasites and the diseases they can carry. An ounce of prevention is absolutely worth a pound of cure here, so make sure your pet is protected! Don’t forget the heartworm preventatives. One of their most important jobs (despite the obvious “heartworm” prevention) is the protection they give your pet from common intestinal worms. Finally, while talking about prevention, it almost goes without saying to ensure that your pet is up to date on vaccines before taking them out!

Fireworks can contain a variety of heavy metals, such as iron, copper, barium, mercury, phosphorus and magnesium, and they can cause poisoning if ingested. Most of our pets have an inquisitive side, so it’s not surprising that the most common place for burns is around the face, specifically the muzzle, lips, and tongue. If ingested, the metals or other materials may cause vomiting, lethargy, diarrhea, jaundice, tremors, and seizures. Parvovirus Infection Treatment
When you walk your pet on a leash, you can help to monitor the spread of disease. It is less likely that your dog will be exposed to Canine Parvovirus, Distemper, or Giardia. A leashed dog can be restrained or distracted from sniffing the droppings of other animals.
Ear Infection Treatment
Routine ear cleanings can be an important part of your pet’s health. Some pets develop waxy ears more than others, and depending on their breed, can be predisposed to chronic ear infections. Keeping the ears clean can prevent infections and extra trips to the vet. Not to mention you’ll have a much happier furry friend! Cats and dogs have ear canals that are “L” shaped. Because of this, you cannot see the wax or debris that builds up deep in the deeper, horizontal portion of the ear canal. In order to clean this area, it is ideal to use an ear flush to break up any wax that may be building up and to allow that wax to surface out of the ear. Ear cleaners are available both over the counter and at our office. Despite its popularity as a common home remedy, we advise you to never hydrogen peroxide as an ear cleaner. That is because, after all the bubbling stops, it turns into water. Water is a predisposer for ear infections. We also favor genuine ear flushing products over any other home remedy formulas.

They age quicker than we do, and they don’t always show visible signs of arthritis or joint pain that can affect them as the temperature becomes more and more brisk. Our highly advanced patient vital signs monitor enables us to both monitor many important parameters (like EKG and blood pressure) during your anesthetized furry loved one’s procedures, and it also allows us to watch their vital signs when we’re not even with them! It can interact with our facility’s wireless computer system, allowing us to view their parameters from other rooms. Your own doctors and nurses utilize such systems to watch your vital signs from their stations without disturbing you in your hospital bed. Should your pet’s health needs be that dangerous, we can provide such care as well.

As we get ready for the approaching winter season, we must also be careful of keeping antifreeze in a safe place — away from our pets. Antifreeze has an enticing odor to some pets, and is extremely poisonous to dogs and cats alike. Even a small amount can cause irreversible and fatal kidney damage if ingested.

Poor dental health is a matter that affects almost every pet we see. Periodontal disease and other dental problems are painful! Pets are so good at hiding pain of all sorts that you cannot suppose they’re doing fine because they’re not moaning or crying like we do when our mouth hurts. Unlike us, they cannot call out of work and go to the dentist. They’ve got deep seated instincts not to show pain. Their wild counterparts, if they show pain, will be picked on by their comrades, killed and eaten by predators, or just waste away and die if their mouth hurts too much for them to eat properly.

Our high quality, modern digital dental x-ray equipment allows us to make your furry family member more comfortable, and more healthy.

After mapping out your road trip or booking your flight, check if the state or country to which you are traveling requires any specific health certificate documentation, special testing, quarantine periods, or certain treatments prior to your vacation. Microchipping might also be mandated either before entering. When traveling internationally, contact the destination country’s embassy to find the exact protocols and then set up the necessary appointments with us. Dr. Estelle is an “accredited” veterinarian, authorized by the USDA to examine your pet and sign the necessary documentation they may need for travel.

What we’d like to emphasize is the fact that pets age so much faster than we do. Yet, if we can catch many geriatric conditions in their earlier stages, we can help decrease their pain, discomfort, and suffering, and possibly increase their lifespan simply by having the doctor examine them more frequently in their latter years. The classic “dog to human years” calculation is really a faithful example. So, pretend one dog year is like seven human years. How nervous would your family physician be if they only got to see you or your senior family members once every seven years... in one of the most tumultuous periods of life!? We feel that an examination every six months is much more appropriate to the needs of senior pets.
