I've been going to McCurley's for years. What impressed me the most was that I went there one day because my brakes were squeaking. Bud, the lead mechanic at McCurley's, pulled all of my tires to thoroughly inspect. He told me all of my brakes were just fine. Now, being a woman he/they could have taken me to the cleaners and told me I needed front brakes, rear brakes or brakes all around, but instead he told me everything was just fine! I was sold at that point and have been going back ever since. All of the guys there appear to be the same way-honest, professional, detailed, and generally have your best interest at heart.

Since then I had another problem; my car was making a roaring noise coming from the rear. I took my car in and Bud thought it may be the bearings. At the same time he noticed that my rear driver side tire was wearing uneven. He took my car for a ride and said it might be the bearing, but at the same time said it may just be that tire. I said ok, let me think about this, thinking that it was probably something expensive like the bearing, which for a Toyota Rav4 is very expensive just for the part.



I had moved far away (50 miles) and wanted to get a mechanic on my side of town that I could trust and build a professional relationship with. I took my car to a place in Lawrenceville and he too noticed the tire, took my car out for a test drive and said it is probably the bearing on the passenger side-rear, and it seemed like that was where most of the noise was coming from, but really hard to tell. He never again mentioned the tire. I told him to go ahead and fix the bearing. When I called to check on the car, he had it fixed and said I should really replace the rear shocks (something Bud didn't mention when I asked him how they and the rest of the car looked underneath and around the wheels, hmmm), I told him to go ahead and replace them too. I was so happy to get my 'like new' and safe car back. While I was driving along I noticed my car is making the same roaring noise!!!! Oh My God!!!!! $700.00 later (shocks, bearing, rental car for 2 days) and the same noise! I called the guy and he said the noise may be coming from the other rear wheel bearing and that I probably would be wasting money replacing it. He said I could bring it back in to make sure that everything was ok on the work that they did. I asked what he thought about the unevenly worn tire and he said that's a possibility. (I'm thinking, why didn't he check that out first!)

I took my car back to Bud and he broke out the Doctor tools. He took a screw driver and held the tip end to the bearing and the handle end to his ear while another mechanic spun the wheel; they did this on both rear wheels. He found no trouble what so ever in either bearing and confirmed that the rear passenger bearing had actually been replaced ( I was starting to wonder if the work was even completed). He said it's probably the tire! I went home, since I have tools too and swapped the bad tire out for the spare, took her for a ride-Noise ALL Gone!!!

Went back the next day, bought a set of tires and I'm living happily ever after! Sad about the 700.00, but I do believe in Karma.

Bottom Line: If you want folks you can trust-GO TO MCCURLEY'S SHELL and ask for Bud!

This was partially my fault, thinking that it wouldn't be something as simple as 1 tire and also trying to get a new convenient mechanic on my new side of town.
