Gynecology

Female Infertility
Endometriosis is the presence of tissue that normally grows inside the uterus in an abnormal anatomical location. The condition is very common, and is the most common cause of unexplained female infertility. Patients with endometriosis can have a variety of symptoms, including, painful periods, painful intercourse, and painful bowel movements, especially around the time of the menstrual cycle. Some women with endometriosis do not have any symptoms and may not know they have the condition until a pelvic mass is detected on a pelvic examination or a problem with infertility is discovered.
Obstetrics
Dr. Staci Kenner joined Cartersville OB/GYN in August 2012 and became partners with Dr's Barfield and Ribot in 2016. She performed her OB/GYN residency at Methodist Dallas Medical Center where she served as chief resident from 2011-2012. While there, she received prestigious medical-industry awards for residents in the specialties of Obstetrics and Gynecology and minimally invasive Gynecology. Dr. Kenner received her Medical Doctorate from Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine in Cleveland, Ohio and holds a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology Pre-Medicine from Spelman College in Atlanta. She is a Fellow of the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (FACOG), and a member of the American Medical Association and the American Association of Gynecological Laparoscopists. She also holds certifications in Basic Cardiac Life Support and Advanced Cardiac Life Support.
Endometriosis
Medical treatment for painful intercourse is based on the underlying cause (e.g., fibroids, endometriosis, ovarian cysts, retroverted uterus), the extent and severity of those conditions, and other factors. Please refer to these conditions for specific information on medical therapy options for each.
Pregnancy
Stress urinary incontinence (SUI) – Leakage resulting from effort or exertion (coughing, laughing, sneezing, exercise, running, lifting, etc.) that puts pressure or “stress” on the bladder. This results from weak pelvic muscles or a weakening of the connective tissues between the bladder and vagina. The weakness is due to pregnancy and childbirth or from declining levels of the hormone estrogen.
Labor and Delivery
Kelly received her Bachelor's Degree in Nursing from Brenau University in 1989 and has been a Perioperative Nurse with Georgia Advanced Surgery Center for Women since 2018. She is responsible for providing care to patients throughout preop, in the operating room and during recovery. She oversees Infection Control Surveillance and manages the preop paperwork and documents. Kelly was a Labor and Delivery Nurse at Cartersville Medical Center for years, as well as Wellstar Cobb Hospital in Austell. Prior to joining our team, she was a preoperative and postoperative nurse at Cartersville Medical Center.

Ovarian Cancer
Most have heard about Angelina Jolie's decision to recently undergo a preventative double mastectomy after BRCA testing revealed she had an inherited BRCA1 gene mutation, which dramatically increases one’s risk of developing breast and/or ovarian cancer. While Jolie's story rightly enlightened and empowered women about these hereditary cancers and their treatment options, it also raised questions and concerns among many about the test itself. The BRCA gene test is a blood test that uses DNA analysis to identify harmful changes or mutations in either one of the two breast cancer susceptibility genes — BRCA1 and BRCA2. Women who have inherited mutations in these genes face a much higher risk of developing breast cancer (up to 87% higher) and ovarian cancer (up to 50% higher) compared with the general population. New research strongly suggests that these defective genes also greatly increase a woman’s chance of developing cancer in her Fallopian tubes and peritoneum as well.
Endoscopy

Multiple Sclerosis
Overflow urinary incontinence – Incontinence that occurs when the bladder is constantly full, and reaches a point where it overflows and leaks urine. This condition may be the result of weak bladder muscles, due to nerve damage from various conditions, such as multiple sclerosis, and spinal cord injury. This is also referred to as Neurogenic Bladder.

Ultrasound
Many ovarian cysts have no symptoms. Non-symptomatic ovarian cysts are often felt by a doctor examining the ovaries during a routine pelvic exam. When the growth is large or there are multiple cysts, the patient may experience fullness or heaviness in the abdomen, pressure on the rectum or bladder, painful intercourse, and pelvic pain that is a constant dull ache or occurs shortly before the beginning or end of menstruation. Because symptomatic ovarian cysts cause symptoms that may be the same as ovarian tumors that may be cancerous, ovarian cysts should always be diagnosed through a pelvic exam and ultrasound.

Robotic Surgery
Newly published findings on robotic surgery for benign (non-cancerous) gynecological conditions conclude what our surgeons have said since the technology’s 2005 FDA approval: There is still no credible evidence of its superiority over conventional laparoscopic surgery – except in costs.
Hysterectomy
While at Emory, he and a fellow Ob/Gyn resident learned of the first laparoscopic hysterectomy performed in the U.S. in 1988. Eager to embrace what would become the gold standard of gynecological care, they began performing procedures such as ectopic pregnancy surgery never before done at Emory laparoscopically by faculty or residents. To the surprise of their faculty, their patients did extremely well, with much faster, less painful recoveries than those who underwent traditional surgery. Their success led Ribot to receive the first-ever annual "Best Surgical Resident Award" bestowed by the American Association of Gynecological Laparoscopists (AAGL) at Emory.
Endometrial Ablation
Minimally invasive surgical treatment options for AUB include polyectomy, hysteroscopic or laparoscopic myomectomy, endometrial ablation, total laparoscopic hysterectomy (TLH), laparoscopic supracervical hysterectomy (LSH), and total vaginal hysterectomy (TVH). Which treatment is best for the patient depends on the underlying cause and severity of the abnormal bleeding as well as other considerations, including whether or not the patient wants to preserve her fertility and/or uterus. The Georgia Advanced Surgery Center performs all of these procedures as sameday, outpatient surgeries that require no unsightly incisions or hospital stays and provide patients far faster, less painful recovery than traditional surgery.
