Dental Sealants
Sealants should be used as part of a child's total preventive dental care. Dental sealants are thin plastic coatings which are applied to the chewing surfaces of the molars (back teeth). Most tooth decay in children and teens occurs in these surfaces. Sealants cover the chewing surfaces to prevent decay. Applying sealants does not require drilling or removing tooth structure. It is an easy three-step process: We clean the tooth with a special toothpaste. A special cleansing liquid, on a tiny piece of cotton, is rubbed gently on the tooth and is washed off. Finally, the sealant is painted on the tooth. It takes about a minute for the sealant to form a protective shield. One sealant application can last for as long as 5 to 10 years. Sealants should be checked regularly, and reapplied if they are no longer in place.

Bonding is a quick, painless in-office procedure to repair cracks, chips, gaps between teeth or cover stained teeth to enhance your smile. Dr. Megan Shiga has been the practicing owner at Dentistry of Chagrin since 2008. Dr. Shiga received her Bachelor of Science degree at John Carroll University graduating top of her class of the Biology majors in 2003. She graduated from The Ohio State University College of Dentistry in 2007and received her Doctor of Dental Surgery degree. Dr. Shiga is a member of the Greater Cleveland Dental Association, Ohio Dental Association and American Dental Association. She has served on multiple subcommittees and the delegation for the ODA and is a past president of the Greater Cleveland Dental Society Foundation. She has also served on the GCDS Board of Trustees. Dr. Shiga regularly volunteers for Medworks Dental Clinic. She also volunteers at her children's school and The Westside Catholic Center. She has extensive experience with composite restorations, same day crowns and bridges, veneers, and treating children. She also enjoys straightening teeth with clear aligner therapy. Dr. Shiga enjoys staying up to date with the latest technology. Dr. Shiga was born and raised in the Cleveland area. She resides in Shaker Heights with her husband John and three daughters. In her spare time, she enjoys playing tennis, attending her children's sporting events, and reading a good book.
