Operational since 1881, the American Red Cross is one of the leading emergency response organizations in the world. Located in Charlotte, N.C., it is a part of a worldwide movement that offers neutral humanitarian care to the victims of war. The American Red Cross distinguishes itself by also aiding victims of devastating natural disasters. In addition to domestic disaster relief, the organization offers services in five other areas: community services providing support for military members/families; the collection, processing and distribution of lifesaving blood/blood products; educational programs promoting health/safety; and international relief/development programs.
