Endoscopy
We strive to improve mobility while minimizing the effects of surgery. As such, minimally invasive procedures such as endoscopy and arthroscopic surgery may reduce hospital stays, or perhaps even allow you to be eligible for outpatient treatment. Additionally, minimally invasive surgery normally results in far less operative trauma for the patient than an equivalent invasive procedure. Our physicians will tell you if minimally invasive surgery may be right for you.

The MRI/CT is used in conjunction with a computer program to create three-dimensional personalized surgical positioning guides. The guides allow for a more custom fit of the knee replacement implant system, especially for you. We offer the Zimmer Biomet implant system, utilizing the Vanguard Complete Knee System.

Dr. Richard J. Hartman, Jr. is one of the first surgeons in Michigan to implant Oxinium long-lasting knee replacements using BrainLab Vector Vision, a state-of-the-art surgical navigation system. In addition to the computer-assisted procedure, Dr. Hartman is also one of the first to use a minimally-invasive technique designed to reduce tissue trauma and pain. Dr. Hartman specializes in total knee and hip replacements, arthroscopic procedures, and trauma. In 2010, Dr. Hartman was awarded title of Fellow of the American Osteopathic Academy of Orthopedics.
Arthroscopy
Arthroscopy is normally a quick, minimally invasive, outpatient knee surgery performed by The Family Practice & Orthopedic Care Center, PC that allows you to resume normal activities within a few days. By making a small incision through the skin, our physicians are able to insert an arthroscope — which is a small camera with lighting capabilities and incredible flexibility — into the knee joint to examine problems and allow for comprehensive repair to the joints. We can perform this procedure for both diagnostic and treatment purposes for conditions such as torn floating cartilage, torn surface cartilage, trimming damaged cartilage, and even ACL reconstruction. As a minimally invasive procedure by nature, it allows for patients to get back to their normal lifestyles within a short period of time. For example, patients can usually return to work in less than a week. Athletes, meanwhile, may only require five to six days on the sidelines before being allowed back into competition.

Joint Replacement
Any joint in our bodies can “wear out”. Wearing out means the surfaces that rub together no longer do so smoothly. The cartilage cushion is gone and often the body has formed bone spurs. When non-surgical treatments no longer provide acceptable pain relief, we can resurface the ends of the two bones and considerably improve the way the joint feels. Typically, the joint replacement “parts” consist of a piece of metal, then plastic then another piece of metal. The components are made of very special materials. Sometimes they are fixed to the bone with “bone cement”, screws, or the bone may be able to “grow into the prosthesis” if the patient is young and healthy enough.

In knee arthroscopy, we monitor the progress of surgery by inserting a small camera into your knee joint. After it’s been properly placed, we pump salt water into the aforementioned area to make for an easier surgery.

Physical Therapy
Yes, in most cases. Typically, you will need to be able to get out of bed on your own, get dressed on your own, walk 200 feet under your own power (walker OK but no one holding you up), and go up and down 2 stairs on your own. If you can do these things you are probably safe to go home and then follow-up with home physical therapy followed by a transition to outpatient physical therapy. If you still need help to do any of the above after 3 days in the hospital, you will be strongly encouraged to go to an in-patient physical therapy (means you stay there) for about 5-7 days (or until you can do those things we mentioned earlier) so that we know you are safe to go home. Overall therapy is usually a minimum of 6 weeks and may be as long as 3 months after surgery. Therapy can help you achieve the most motion and least amount of pain as quickly as possible.

Diabetic Foot Care
Dr. Yanni Chen primarily provides general health care for patients age 12 and up, with a focus on geriatrics, women’s health and preventative medicine. She also assists on many of the longer, more complicated surgical procedures for total joint replacement, trauma or patients with multiple co-morbidities. Dr. Chen supports continuity of care for patients already established with her and allows for an added level of comfort and medical support not usually provided or available to the average surgical patient. Dr. Chen provides diabetic foot care, and diagnostic testing such as tests for carpal tunnel, osteoporosis, hearing, COPD, and asthma. She also offers wart, skin tag, and mole removal.
