People with weak immune systems due to illness or medications are more likely to develop bacterial or fungal sinusitis. Some people with allergies can have what is called “allergic fungal sinusitis.” Acute sinus disease lasts anywhere from 3 to 8 weeks. Sinus infections lasting longer than 8 weeks are considered chronic.

Ear Infections
During an examination, the doctor will use an otoscope to look at and assess the ear. The doctor checks for redness in the ear, and/or fluid behind the eardrum, and to see if the eardrum moves. These are the signs of an ear infection. Two other tests may also be performed.

Electrocardiogram
An electrocardiogram (EKG or ECG) is a test that checks for problems with the electrical activity of your heart. An EKG translates the heart’s electrical activity into line tracings on paper. The spikes and dips in the line tracings are called waves.
Immunizations
The vaccinations usually start in September (or as soon as the vaccine is on hand) and continue throughout the flu season, into January, and beyond. This is because the timing and duration of influenza seasons are never the same. Flu outbreaks usually peak at around January, but they can happen as early as October. The earlier the vaccination, the more time your body has to build up a defense against the virus.

Urinary Tract Infection
To find out whether you have a UTI, your doctor will test a sample of urine for markers of infection. You will be asked to give a “clean catch” urine sample by washing the genital area and collecting a “midstream” sample of urine in a sterile container. This method of collecting urine helps prevent bacteria around the genital area from getting into the sample and confusing the test results. At the Medical Center of Marin, we are able to perform a urinalysis test while you wait.

X-Rays
Computed Tomography
In most cases, sinusitis can be diagnosed by personal history and physical examination. However, if bacterial sinusitis is suspected, nasal swabs for culture and CT scans may be obtained.

General Surgery
Dr. Curtis, Executive Director of the Medical Center of Marin, is originally from Chicago, IL. Always being encouraged to strive to achieve great things, at one time he seriously considered a career in public service as a politician. He wanted to be the first African-American President of the United States but some guy named Obama beat him to that. Besides, his political interests were set aside when he found his calling as a reservist. The field medical training inspired Dr. Curtis to change his undergraduate major at UCLA and focus on becoming a physician. He attended medical school and trained in general surgery at UCLA. Thereafter, he attended law school at UC Hasting College of the Law in San Francisco. He did this not only to gain a broader educational experience, but to meld two disciplines for the benefit of patients and clients—something he feels he is able to do at the Medical Center of Marin.
Orthopedics
Dr. Cipa, Director of Rehabilitation at the Medical Center of Marin, attended Cal-Poly, San Luis Obispo for his undergraduate training and Cleveland Chiropractic College in Los Angeles, graduating in 1988. For the past 30 years, he has been practicing in the Bay Area. Prior to joining Medical Center of Marin, Dr. Cipa was the Director of Rehabilitation of a large clinic in San Francisco where he managed a multidisciplinary team of acupuncturists, physical therapists and massage therapists, all while working with orthopedic surgeons and clinicians on patient care. His chiropractic techniques include diversified, Activator and ART (Active Release Technique). Dr. Cipa’s main focus is in orthopedics, rehabilitation and exercise as an adjunct to utilizing evidence-based chiropractic care. During the winter, Dr. Cipa enjoys skiing and spent years with the national Ski Patrol and patrolled Sugar Bowl in North Lake Tahoe. During the spring and summer months, you’ll often find him riding his hard tail 29er with a large group of local mountain bike enthusiasts in Marin.
