There's been a lot of discussion in the media surrounding metal restorations. Are they dangerous to our health? Do patients have reactions to the mercury? Though the debate is still underway, thousands of patients have had, and are still having silver fillings placed. For over 100 years it has been the trusted, most inexpensive material used by dentists around the world. And though our dentists believe amalgam fillings are still a safe and reliable restoration, there are some things to consider before choosing this option. Silver fillings rely on the tooth itself to hold them in place and do not bond to, or add any additional strength to the surrounding tooth structure, thus causing prolonged sensitivity. When preparing to place an amalgam filling, more of the natural tooth structure needs to be drilled away. Therefore, over time, cracking of the tooth structure around silver fillings is quite common. The good news, however, is that there's an equally economic method of restoring teeth.
Veneers
Veneers are a highly effective way of covering fairly minor cosmetic defects with the teeth. Every veneer is a wafer-thin shell of porcelain, designed specifically for the tooth that it is going to cover so that it looks completely natural. Veneers sit over the top of the natural enamel of the teeth, hiding imperfections such as chips and stains. Veneers can also be used to add thickness or height to teeth that seem undersized or to close small gaps that may have opened between the teeth.

Bridges
For those patients who are missing only a few teeth, a fixed bridge or a partial denture may be a better option. The fixed bridge is designed to replace only one or two missing teeth in the same area. A fixed bridge closes the gap where the missing tooth is present with a false tooth, called a pontic. It is held in place by essentially crowning the teeth on both sides, called abutments. Unfortunately, this often means grinding down perfectly healthy teeth. It is permanently cemented and is not meant to be a removable appliance. Though a fixed bridge is not considered state of the art in tooth replacement, it can be a reliable option and may be expected to last as long as 10 years with excellent home care and regular preventative maintenance.
Dental Bonding
Dental bonding is a popular alternative to veneers, as well as teeth whitening. The treatment is used to cover minor imperfections such as stains and discoloration and involves placing a special resin over the tooth and molding it so that it fits properly and covers the aspects of your teeth that cause you the most concern. It is then hardened using a special light, before being polished to match your existing teeth.

Root Canal Treatment
For years, patients have viewed root canal therapy as one of the most dreaded procedures performed in a dental office. It used to require more than one appointment to complete and took a substantial amount of time. Patients would often choose to sacrifice the tooth, rather than go through the process of treating and restoring it. Unfortunately, this eventually left patients with the problem of too many missing teeth and resulted in a large investment to replace them. Now days that situation may easily be avoided. Thanks to the advanced training and techniques practiced by our dentists, root canal therapy is a relatively simple procedure, done with little or no discomfort.
