Established in 1923 in Detroit Michigan as the UNIVERSAL WEATHERSTRIP AND SCREEN COMPANY, manufacturing wood storms, screens and porch enclosures, this firm grew steadily through World War II. With the advent of aluminum and the increasing consumer demand for aluminum doors, windows and similar products, the company changed to specialize in weatherstrip products for residential, commercial and industrial structures and, at that time, tailored its name to UNIVERSAL WEATHERSTRIP COMPANY, INC. During the years following the war, UNIVERSAL constantly expanded to other product lines to compliment its weatherstrip products, and to satisfy the contractors growing needs in the construction industry. The addition of caulking compounds, sealants, mastics and masonry cleaning chemicals made UNIVERSAL dominant in its field as being the only supply house of its kind, not only in Michigan, but the entire Great Lakes area. In 1985, UNIVERSAL again found it necessary to expand its name to identify itself as a supplier of specialty building materials. We added epoxies, waterstops, building supplies and materials, contractors tools and equipment to our existing product lines.
