You can help prevent serious dental problems by making sure that your pet receives regular professional dental cleanings and a good daily home dental care program.
Vaccination
Dogs are required to be up to date on Rabies, Bordetella, and Influenza vaccinations, and cats must be up to date on their Rabies vaccination.
Nutritional Counseling
Symptoms of heartworms in dogs are not apparent until several months after the onset of infection. Common signs of heartworm infection are coughing, lethargy, loss of appetite, weakness, fainting, or distended abdomen. The treatment of a heartworm positive dog involves a series of pharmaceutical injections to kill the adult worms; this can be a risky process. Once administered, the patient must be confined, closely monitored, and any resulting complications are to be managed accordingly.
Comprehensive Examination
At DeKalb Animal Hospital, we recommend dental check-ups at your pet’s annual wellness visit to help prevent serious dental problems. We perform routine dental services including annual examinations, professional teeth cleaning, and extractions when necessary.
Prevention of heartworms can be accomplished by a variety of methods including annual injections and monthly products that combine heartworm control with flea, tick, and intestinal parasite protections. If you have missed a month or more of administering your pet’s treatment, it’s important to have your pet tested for heartworms before beginning a dosage again.
Pain Management
Pain management is another excellent application of our therapy laser. Instead of treating conditions such as osteoarthritis with medications, laser therapy is an excellent drug-free alternative that may provide relief without the use of medication.
Our in-house diagnostic capabilities enable us to perform a variety of tests that help identify your pet’s condition quickly and accurately. Some of the tests that we conduct include blood chemistry panels, complete blood counts, urinalysis, heartworm and feline leukemia/immune deficiency viral tests, fecal flotations, T-4 thyroid testing, and more.
Heart Disease Treatment
Neglected dental hygiene leads to periodontal disease initially through a buildup of plaque on the surface of the tooth and below the gum line. Over time, the bacterium in the plaque leads to inflammation of the gums, the destruction of supportive tissues and bone which results in red gums, bad breath, tooth loss, gum infection, and pain. Periodontal disease is also linked to liver and heart disease and has the potential of shortening your pet’s life.
Periodontal Disease Treatment
One of the most common medical conditions in pets is dental disease. More than two-thirds of dogs have some degree of dental disease by age 3. Small breeds and those with short snouts are more likely to develop dental disease at an even earlier age due to their smaller jaws and crowding of teeth. Dogs can suffer from dental problems that are the same as or similar to those that people experience. People, however, tend to develop tooth decay and cavities while dogs tend to develop periodontal disease.
DeKalb Animal Hospital offers safe, advanced surgical techniques and technology to pets residing in Fort Payne, and other communities in DeKalb and Jackson Counties. We perform routine surgical services including spay/neuters for cats and dogs, a wide variety of soft tissue surgeries such as biopsies, exploratory surgeries, and tumor removals. We also perform c-sections and emergency laceration repair.
In addition to our medical, dental, and surgical care, DeKalb Animal Hospital offers professional boarding services with veterinary supervision and individualized attention from our staff. We want your pets to be healthy and happy when they board with us, so we do our best to make them feel comfortable and at ease.
Spaying and Neutering
There are several factors that help determine the best age for spaying and neutering including your pet’s breed (larger breeds wait longer) and individual health status. Typical spaying and neutering for most pets not used for breeding purposes is usually recommended at about 6 months of age. Spaying and neutering help with animal population control and prevent unwanted pets. Just as importantly, spaying and neutering can improve the overall health of your pet, and help in avoiding certain reproductive diseases, prostate issues, and some types of cancer.
Some health conditions may not be obvious during an external examination. For this reason, we recommend blood work at your pet’s annual check-up to provide a consistent record of your pet’s health history. Should any significant changes show up in the test results, we would be able to identify potential health issues before they become a major issue. We also conduct blood work screenings for pets who are scheduled for surgery to ensure there are no underlying issues that may result in complications.
X-Ray
DeKalb Animal Hospital’s in-house diagnostics laboratory and digital radiography capabilities provide pet owners with an efficient diagnosing process for their pets. We can process many test results on site, typically within an hour. This is especially beneficial for critical illness and injury cases that need prompt diagnosis and treatment.
Microchipping
Microchipping your pet is a safe, easy, effective way to permanently link your pet to you and provide you with peace of mind. At DeKalb Animal Hospital, we recommend microchipping your pets even if they stay indoors.
We also offer separate grooming services that you may want to take advantage of while your pet is staying with us. We provide professional cuts, nail trims, ear cleaning, and anal gland expression. Please let us know if you care to have your pet groomed when you make your boarding reservation.
