Professionalism

Excellent care for our multiple pets! We have had checkups, parasite eradication, and surgeries done there, and sadly, end of life situations handled there, too. They have been very helpful with all of them. Including, importantly, compassion and support with the end of life issues (two different species with cancer), which is so very important!

I would suggest them for anyone needing pet care in Bourbon & surrounding counties, with no hesitation.

Most young puppies are infested with ascarids. Other worm parasites may also be present, but they?re not as common. It is advisable to have your veterinarian check your puppy?s stool before deworming for ascarids, because if other worms are present, a broad-spectrum deworming agent may be recommended.

In cats, diseases such as Panleukopenia, rabies, feline rhinotrachetitis, calicivirus, chlamydia, and feline leukemia are the most preventable diseases.
Ear Infection Treatment
Our doctors will perform a physical examination from head to toe. We utilize an exam checklist to assist our evaluation and to insure consistency during our exams. Starting at your petâ€™s head, we will look at eyes, ears, nose and mouth.Ear infections are often the only sign noted with allergies in pets. Ear mites are common in cats. Eye examinations often reveal health issues such as anemia, infections, glaucoma, cataracts, jaundice, kidney problems and allergies. Examining your pet's mouth can reveal signs of anemia, dehydration, dental tarter build up and gum disease. Dental disease is not only painful for your pet, but also can lead to infection of heart, liver and kidney's leading to diseases in these organs.

Hip Dysplasia Treatment
The ideal time to bring a new pup home is between 8-12 weeks, especially true for small and toy breeds. You should be sure the breeder has started the puppy on its vaccinations, has been de-wormed and veterinary checked. You might ask the breeder if they honor any guarantees for heritable conditions such as hip dysplasia or patella luxations. Sometimes many heritable conditions do not show up until the puppy is older. Many reputable breeders guarantee their pups from certain breed specific conditions until they are a year old.

Periodontal Disease Treatment
The major cause of halitosis is periodontal disease. This is an infection of the gums and potentially the other supporting structures of the teeth. Plaque builds up every day on the tooth surface including at the gum line. Left in place, the plaque can mineralize, or harden, in less than 2 days, forming calculus or tartar. The tartar will stick to the tooth surface forming a scaffold for more plaque accumulation. The continued build-up of tartar both above and below the gum line can eventually produce an environment that is a haven for certain types of bacteria that may be more destructive to the periodontal tissues and also produce a more noticeable odor.

We also offer emergency surgery as well as critical care. Please attempt to call ahead in case of an emergency to alert us to the situation and allow us to prepare.
Declawing
To avoid incidental damage that can occur during climbing, cat trees and elevated walk-ways should be provided. Keep claws trimmed to help decrease damage to valuables. If unwanted destructive behavior occurs despite your efforts, please talk to our doctors about other suggestions. In most cases, solutions can be found that may be able to avoid declawing.

Our in-house laboratory facilities provide for serum chemistry, hematology, serology, urinalysis and parasite testing. Our ABXIS VetScan and HMT blood analysis machines allow us to perform very critical analysis so that when time counts we can have this information at our fingertips.We also utilize commercial veterinary laboratories for specialized diagnostics and consultations.
X-Ray
Digital radiography (x-ray) has revolutionized Equine Medicine. Now we are able to quickly and easily diagnose potential causes of lameness and bone abnormalities with less stress your your horse. Digital radiography allows us to view the images immediately and to retake images or to take additional views quickly if needed. Digital radiography also gives us the ability, if needed, to electronically send the x-rays to board certified radiologists for their opinion. In addition, the images produced by digital radiography are of much better quality than film radiographs and can be manipulated digitally, giving us the best possible radiographic information to help find the diagnosis.

Boarding
We are a full service veterinary hospital. Our knowledgeable health care team and our facilities allow us to offer you a wide range of veterinary services, to include small animal wellness/preventative care, surgical procedures (including spay/neuters, dental and orthopedic), medical treatments, canine behavioral assistance, a comprehensive diagnostic laboratory with radiography, ultrasound and same day blood chemistry results, boarding and grooming, home pick-up and delivery for elderly and disabled, in house pharmacy and Equine and Livestock medical assistance. We are proud to be the only Kansas State approved laboratory in Southeast Kansas, giving us the ability to provide you with same day results on Coggins test for your horses. Our large animal working facilities can accommodate small groups of cattle and meet your emergency needs.
Grooming
We are happy to provide clients with basic grooming care and all medically necessary care for their pet. However, we do not provide "breed" specific cuts. We do make every attempt to groom your pet to your tastes. Routine and therapeutic bathing services are available. Medical grooming services such as clipping matted areas and cleaning unhealthy coats are available. Nail Trimming and anal sac expression are also available. Our groomer, JoAnn, is available Monday-Wednesday-Friday mornings to help you keep your pet looking pretty.
