Charles Hoogland established Family Video in 1978. Hoogland inherited Midstates Appliance and Supply Company, the predecessor to Family Video, from his father, Clarence Hoogland. In the 1970s, Midstates Appliance got stuck with a large quantity of videos. Having no idea what to do with all the videos, it was suggested that the company rent the videos out. Thus, the Video Movie Club of Springfield, located in Springfield, Ill., was created. The Video Movie Club was one of the first video rental stores in the United States. The club charged $25 to gain membership and $5 to rent a movie for three nights. The Family Video chain of stores evolved from this club. The company is one of the largest privately owned movie and game renters in the United States. It employs more than 4,000 people throughout approximately 10 states in nearly 400 stores. Family Video maintains a location in Glenview, Ill.
