Overall

I recommend Laurel Park Animal Hospital to all of my friends who are pet owners. There is a caring atmosphere from all of the staff. The condition of the pet is always clearly explained. The staff is aware of economic concerns. In my 35 years as a pet owner, Laurel Park Animal Hospital is the best facility that I have encountered.

Overall

The professionalism and compassion displayed by everyone at Laurel Park Animal Hospital is outstanding. I "interviewed" a variety of vets and rejected them before finding Dr. Purnell and his team. They take exceptionally good care of all four of my dogs and their followup on all details is amazing. If you're in the Hendersonville area, this is THE vet to have!

Laurel Park Animal Hospital is a full-service, small animal veterinary hospital providing comprehensive medical, surgical and dental care.
Vaccination
Just like humans, kittens need vaccinations to prevent life-threatening diseases. At six weeks of age, maternal antibody levels begin to fade, leaving kittens unprotected. Kittens are usually given a series of three sets of vaccinations within the first 6 months of their life.
Veterinary Ophthalmology
Dr. Pernell is a native of Western North Carolina and is a graduate of UNC-Chapel Hill where he earned a Bachelor of Science Degree in Biology and minored in Chemistry. He went on to obtain his Veterinary Medical Degree from Mississippi State University, where he graduated with honors. As well as being a treating veterinarian, Dr. Pernell also spent several years on the Henderson County animal advisory committee, making recommendations for the shelter and for county ordinances. He also served on the managing board of REACH (now known as MedVet) for several years before it became privately owned. Dr. Pernell is a member of the American Veterinary Medical Association, the North Carolina Veterinary Medical Association, and the American Association of Feline Practitioners. He has worked closely with Community Partnership for Pets, Blue Ridge Humane Society, and the Henderson County shelter to aid sick pets that need adoption. In 2007, Dr. Pernell joined with Dr. Zehr to purchase Laurel Park Animal Hospital; eventually he purchased his partnerâ€™s shares to become the sole owner of the hospital. He has special clinical interests in ophthalmology, cardiology and dermatology in dogs and cats. Dr. Pernell is married and he and his wife, Michelle, live in Hendersonville with their children. Dr. Pernell also enjoys attempting to play golf, any type of fishing, and spending time at the beach with his family.

H3N8 Canine Influenza- The dog flu is a highly contagious respiratory disease in dogs, caused by a specific Type A influenza virus. It has a morbidity rate estimated at 80%. This vaccine is recommended for any pet exposed to other dogs on a regular basis.
Injury Treatment
We are proud to announce we are now offering laser therapy, an innovative new way to treat pain and inflammation in pets. Laser therapy uses specific wavelengths of light to create therapeutic effects such as improved healing time, pain reduction, increased circulation and decreased swelling. Leptospirosisâ€”This is a serious disease that can cause kidney failure and death, and it can infect people. Because it is typically transmitted through the urine of wildlife, it is often found in standing water, including puddles.
Parvovirus Infection Treatment
Distemper (DHPP)â€”This is also considered a core vaccine that protects dogs against distemper virus, canine hepatitis, para-influenza, and parvovirus. It is strongly recommended for all patients.
Feline Retro Virus Treatment
A FeLV (Feline Leukemia)/FIV (Feline Immunodeficiency Virus) test will also be recommended for most kittens and new cats with an unknown history. These life-threatening diseases are highly contagious and are easily transmitted to other cats and kittens.

Some of the more common issues that animals are faced with are problems like Diabetes, Hyper/Hypothyroidism, internal organ infections and inflammation, Congestive Heart Failure and Spinal Cord Disease.
Heart Disease Treatment
When any irregular heart rhythm is detected on a clinical examination, an electrocardiogram ECG or EKG is recommended. The small, electrical impulses normally generated by the heart are amplified 3,000 or more times and recorded by the ECG machine. An ECG is extremely sensitive and can detect minor disturbances in the heart and allow us to diagnose many types of heart disease.
Kidney Disease Treatment
Just as in humans, the likelihood of illness and disease increase with age. Kidney disease, heart disease, thyroid conditions, arthritis, diabetes and cancer are common in senior cats. As your cat reaches its senior years, early detection and proper medical care are the keys in providing a higher quality of life for your cat. Effective new treatments are available to reverse or effectively manage these conditions if detected early. A senior profile, which includes blood and urine testing, can be done in effort to detect these diseases early. This is recommended yearly starting at the age of seven years. We also carry several supplements, vitamins and diets to help your cat during the aging process.
Periodontal Disease Treatment
Your petâ€™s bad breath may be a warning sign of some serious health problems. According to the American Veterinary Dental Society, 80% of dogs and 70% of cats show signs of periodontal (gum) disease by age 3. Periodontal disease is one of the most common conditions seen in pets today.

Although our focus is on preventive medicine, our hospital is equipped with a wide range of diagnostic and treatment capabilities. From in-house Heska blood chemistry analyzers to x-ray, we are ready to meet our patients’ needs. When necessary, we work closely with local and regional Boarded Veterinary Specialists. Our hospital also includes patient-sized and friendly exam rooms, a well-stocked pharmacy, laser surgery suite, dental services station, a central recovery/hospitalization area for close monitoring and indoor boarding kennels with outdoor walking areas.
Declawing
Spaying and Neutering
Between four and six months, your Doctor will recommend spaying or neutering your pet. Spaying your female dog will stop the two-week heats that occur each six months. It will eliminate the risk of unwanted pregnancies. Spaying your female dog also greatly reduces the risk of breast and ovarian cancers as well as uterine infections. Neutering your male dog will add about three years to his life expectancy. Neutering reduces the male dogs natural instinct to roam, fight and mark. It will also reduce the risk of cancer and disease of the prostate and testes.
