HOW DO I GET RID OF DEAD ANIMALS? Dead animal removal is sometimes simple, sometimes very difficult, and always dirty. In a simple case, an animal will die somewhere in plain view - such as under a house, in plain sight in the attic, or so on. However, most of the time, the animal dies in an unknown area - down a wall, in the ductwork, under the insulation, etc. It is our job to find and remove the dead animal, and clean up any residuals (juices, maggots, etc). Some jobs are incredibly challenging - animals will crawl into the craziest areas - the gap under the bathtub, the gap between the chimney flu and the brick column, in between floors of a home, etc. Wherever it is, we'll find and remove it, and deodorize the area. It's also important to find the cause of the problem - how did the animal get in? - and take preventative steps to stop the same thing from happening again.
Nuisance wildlife control and wild animal management is a specialty line of work, unlike traditional pest control, which typically implies insect control. Nuisance animal trappers deal strictly with mammals and reptiles. There's a big difference between simply spraying a lawn with poison to kill the ants and actually solving a problem with a large animal, such as a raccoon in an attic. Human-wildlife conflicts continue to grow as human populations grow and we spread out development into previously untouched wildlife habitat. Many wildlife species have gone into decline, but some have learned to adapt and even thrive in developed areas. Some animals simply survive better in urban habitats, such as rats and pigeons. Raccoons have learned that garbage cans, dumpsters, and pet dishes make easy sources of food. Squirrels know that buildings are better to live in than trees. When wild animals live in buildings they can destroy property (chewing on wires, etc), make noise (which keeps people awake at night) and cause biohazard and health risks from waste.
Termites
No. Although some companies have both a pest control branch and a wildlife removal branch, the two fields are very different. Typically, a wildlife control operator does not handle insect problems. However, some WCO's do specialize in beehive removal. If you need termite control or any other form of insect control and your wildlife operator does not provide such a service, look in your local yellow pages under the "pest control" category.
Fleas
NUISANCE CONCERNS: Because they are opportunistic scavengers, they can come into conflict with people and cause various problems. They'll steal garbage, pet food, etc. They can distress pets, and if a dog corners one, it can get a nasty bite. They can spread fleas and other parasites. Most of all, they often like to live in human structures, such as under sheds or decks, and they very commonly live inside of attics. When an opossum lives in an attic, it makes the attic its personal toilet, and leave a lot of droppings. Click here for photos of possum poop. They can also cause destruction in houses and attics. In addition, possums very frequently die inside buildings, inside the attic or walls, and the smell of a rotting opossum body is horrible. Click here for more photos of types of possum damage.
Bees
Squirrels have a pretty good sense of memory, but they do forget the locations of their stashes from time to time. They’re also pretty good at moving around with large amounts of food, fast and nimble critters that can climb a tree in less time than it takes for you to blink, but they drop bits occasionally too. An acorn here, a seed there, a nut somewhere else... These food morsels are not always snapped up by other animals — the acorns, seeds, nuts, etc. are then pushed into the ground and potentially sprout into a brand new tree or plant. It’s a little bit like how bees help to pollinate flowers — birds, squirrels, and a string of other animals are responsible for that “accidental" regeneration of plant life.
Ticks
Once you have gained access to the dead animal, try to avoid any contact, as many dead animals will still carry live ticks and other parasites, so wear gloves and long sleeved clothing while moving the carcass. Place it into a thick garbage bag or a plastic container, and then seal it with a second bag to prevent the scent from spreading further. This can then be disposed of in the garbage, or incinerated.
Crickets
Mosquitoes
Flies
Another reason why wild animals could leave your home smelling bad is because they often die inside it. If you have used poison to combat a rodent problem, for example, there’s a good chance the poison will have killed at least one of the animals. That animal will have died somewhere in your home, because it'll do what all animals do when they don't feel well -- they go to bed and take a nap. Except this rodent won’t wake up from its nap. It'll stay there, in its nest, decomposing, attracting flies and maggots, and potentially even becoming a meal for another scavenger. After a while, however, the decomposing corpse will start to kick up an almighty stench. It won't smell like roses in your home, that's for sure!
Beetles
BAT BEHAVIOR: Bats are nocturnal. They sleep in roosts during the daytime, and emerge at dusk. If it's a colony of bats living in a building, they crawl to the edge, and fly out. First they head for water and get a drink, skimming the surface on the wing. They then feast on flying insects, primarily moths and beetles. After a while they get full and head back to the roost in order to rest. They then fly back out to feed some more. They may make several trips per night. Bats use echolocation in order to aid in navigation and feeding on the wing. They emit high-pitched chirps and read the sonar-like returns of the sound waves as they bounce back off of objects. Roosting preference depends on the species and even gender of the bats, but we are only concerned with colonizing bats such as the three mentioned above. These colonies are composed primarily of females. The males roost alone in solitary areas, such as trees. The females form huge clusters, very frequently in man-made architecture such as church towers, attics, bridges, etc. They tolerate and even prefer very high temperatures. Many of the southern bats migrate to different areas as climates change. However, bats in the north hibernate in colder weather.
Moths
Mites
PIGEON NUISANCE CONCERNS: Pigeons might be delightful, if not for the mess they make. When they roost in an area, they leave behind feathers and nesting material, fleas and mites, and of course, most of all, they leave a lot of droppings. Many urban areas are covered with pigeon poop. They defecate a lot, and can cover an area with piles of droppings. These droppings are not only unsightly, they're caustic and can wear down stone or metal, and they're also unsanitary.
Gnats
How to Get Rid of Bats in the Attic - When it comes to animals that are beneficial to have living in your area, bats are actually one of the friendliest creatures as they are insectivores, and will come out around dusk to hunt flying insects such as mosquitoes and gnats. However, when the bats decide to get a little more friendly and actually move in to the attic, they can cause a few more problems. One of the biggest problems is that they do produce a lot of guano, bat droppings, and this can be harmful to people and will need to be cleaned and disinfected.
Slugs
The opossum is omnivorous, living off both animal and plant material. It is an opportunistic feeder and will eat just about anything that is available in its environment. Its widely varied diet includes insects, to earthworms, slugs, snails, crayfish, snakes and lizards, frogs, small rodents, small birds, eggs, grasses, vegetables, fruits, berries, grains, and even dead animal material. The opossum is also a scavenger, raiding garbage cans in homes and settlements.
Snails
Biology These mammals are herbivores so dine on grasses and other vegetation, including berries and items found in people’s gardens. They will also eat insects including grubs, snails and beetles. They are also sometimes known to eat small mammals but this is a more uncommon occurrence than with other mammals of their family group. They tend to enjoy eating some nuts but don’t hide their foods in caches like other animals do. They often weigh around six or eight pounds when full grown. These guys are for the most part diurnal which means they are awake during the day and that they sleep mostly at night.

Badgers
A lot of cubs die prematurely in the hands of predators like dogs and badgers, but even more die from being run over by motor vehicles. They sometimes also die of starvation or cold during hard winters.
Bobcats
Beavers breed between January and March, and the female produces a litter of one to eight kits between April and June. The mother beaver nurses the kits until they are weaned at 10 to 12 weeks of age. Most kits remain with the adults until they are almost two years old after which they leave to find mates and begin new colonies. Thanks to their size, behavior, and habitat, beavers have few enemies. When on land, they are preyed upon by bears, coyotes, bobcats, cougars, and dogs. However, man remains the greatest enemy of these rodents because of their rich fur.

Woodpeckers
WOODPECKER PROBLEMS: The primary problem with woodpeckers is that they peck holes. Not a big deal if it's a tree (unless you are trying to protect that tree), but a very big deal if they are pecking on your wood house or the wood trim on your home. They do so both in search of food and to mark out territory. I have written this guide about how to keep woodpeckers away from your house.
Sparrows
Bird Email From Reader: My daughter has an apartment there and has sparrows nesting in her bathroom vents and it smells terrible. Her apartment owner has sent out some of their construction workers to rake out the nests and birds they can reach but can't get them all. My daughter is going to call again and try to get them to contact you. If they won't go for it, she may call you herself because she wants something done now. This has been going on for a month. They keep hoping the birds will just go away but even if they do the smell will still be there after they screen in the opening.
Pigeons
PIGEON BIOLOGY: The common pigeon, also called the feral pigeon, (Columba livia), is about 12 inches and length and weighs about a pound. Although pigeons can exhibit a variety of colors, most are of the blue-gray variety. Males are more colorful than females. Pairs mate for life, and share in the nest building and parenting duties. They may lay a clutch of eggs at any time of the year. The young hatch 19 days later, and are cared for until they can make it on their own.
Concerns over health risks For these reasons, many people wish to have these nuisance rodents trapped and removed from the attic. Need help? We service over 500 locations in the United States
Mice
STEP TWO - Once you know what the animal is, in this case a mouse or mice, comes the most important step. Inspect your entire outside house or building, and find all the open holes and gaps that mice are using to get into the structure. This can include vents, eave gaps, roof lines, loose siding, areas where pipes enter home, AC chase, etc. ANYWHERE. Any small hole or gap. Check from the ground up, and definitely the entire roof. You need to look for VERY SMALL areas, like a quarter of an inch, or a hole the size of a dime. It takes great attention to detail. Whenever you find one of these areas, seal it up by tacking in steel mesh. I also use a sealant to hold it in and block air flow. You will never remove all the mice unless you can first stop them from getting inside the building in the first place. Read the full guide How to Remove House Mice.
