Ear Infections
This is defined as fluid in the middle ear accompanied by signs or symptoms of ear infection (a bulging eardrum, pain, sometimes with perforation, often with drainage of pus or purulent material.). Acute otitis media is not a controversial topic. It requires antibiotics. In extremely rare cases, myringotomy (control hole) can be made in the eardrum to relieve unbearable pain and also to control the site of an impending spontaneous perforation.

The first step is the hearing evaluation performed by our audiologists. They will determine if the Esteem® may be an appropriate option for your specific hearing loss. Dr. Li will then perform your medical evaluation, including a CT scan to determine if you have enough space in the mastoid cavity for the implant (it is uncommon not to have enough space, but this is something that needs to be known before surgery). Once you are ready and approved for surgery, the Esteem® is fully implanted with surgery under general anesthesia (you are asleep) that takes approximately 4 hours. It is routinely done as an outpatient procedure and doesn't typically require an overnight stay. You will be taken care of by both your Esteem® Certified Audiologist and Dr. Li. 8 weeks after surgery, the device needs to be turned on. This time allows the middle ear to heal before the implant becomes active. Then, 2 to 3 months later the Esteem® can be fine-tuned for your specific hearing loss. Consult your audiologist or Dr. Li for more specific details.

Ear Surgery
Dr. Li loves gadgets and inventions. In order to treat certain types of vertigo, he built the multiaxial positioning device which facilitates the Canalith Repositioning Procedure. He participated in think tank sessions for the development of the “Round Window micro-catheter” for the delivery of inner ear medication. Along with the Anspach Corp. Dr. Li codeveloped a surgical drill that is used for ear surgery. This drill, named Micromax, started as a concept in 1995. It is now used by many of the major hospitals in the country. Dr. Li holds a patent for a balance forceplate that is used for Vestibular Rehabilitation.
Otolaryngology
Otology and Neurotology are subspecialties of General Otolaryngology (Ear, Nose and Throat -- ENT), and deal in greater depth with problems relating to the ear, specifically the hearing, balance and facial nerves.
Reconstructive Surgery
Unless control of infection is the reason for surgery, tympanoplasty is an elective procedure. Use of a hearing aid may be an alternative to reconstructive surgery. If the ear drum perforation is not repaired, ear plugs are recommended to protect the middle ear from contamination when bathing. This may help to prevent infection and its complications.

A graduate of Jefferson Medical College in Philadelphia, Dr. Li completed his internship at Pennsylvania Hospital and his residency in Otolaryngology at Loyola University Medical Center and Hines Veterans Administration Hospital. Excellent training was obtained in all facets of Otolaryngology (ENT) including Sinus disease, Head and Neck Surgery, Pediatrics, Voice / Laryngology and Facial Plastic Surgery. Dedicated experience in ear surgery was obtained at the Alaskan Native Medical Center in Anchorage Alaska, where chronic ear disease is prevalent among the Eskimos. Dr. Li also participated in the Visiting Doctors Program at the internationally renowned House Ear Institute in Los Angeles California. After graduation, he spent time visiting with, and learning from many prominent Neurotologists. Dr. Li was recruited in 1983 to the South Florida Area to replace a retiring Otologist.

Electrical stimulation is physical therapy modality that in the past has been used primarily for rehabilitation of chronic pain and musculoskeletal problems. It has recently been found that an electrical current could be applied to the external ear with actual suppression of tinnitus. Applied with a blunt tipped probe, the microvoltage current is distributed around the affected ear. The amount of current is adjusted to the patient's comfort level. Success is quite variable. Occupational Therapy
These diagnoses are what vestibular rehabilitation was designed to treat. For example, if a patient suffers a stroke, or some sort of nerve injury, physical and occupational therapy can train the patient to compensate for his loss. Likewise, if a patient has lost components of his balance system, he can be trained to regain balance using the remaining components.
