Erika F. Fernandez, MD, is a board-certified neonatologist. She directs UC San Diego Healths nationally recognized http://health.ucsd.edu/specialties/obgyn/maternity/newborn/nicu/Pages/default.aspx, which provides specialized and emergency care for babies who are born premature, critically ill, or with complex health conditions. Dr. Fernandezs goal is to provide individualized, family-centered patient care that helps ensure a healthy future for newborns and their families. As an associate professor in the Department of Pediatrics, Dr. Fernandez instructs medical students, residents, and fellows at UC San Diego School of Medicine. Her research investigates neonatal outcomes in relation to cardiovascular homeostasis and adrenal function. Dr. Fernandez also leads local and national multicenter studies, and she has conducted studies examining neonatal short and long term outcomes in relation to hypotension and adrenal insufficiency. Dr. Fernandez is a recognized expert in the neonatology field and frequently lectures nationally and internationally. She has chaired neonatology conferences, and has been a reviewer and moderator for national research conferences. She has coauthored numerous articles, and her work has appeared in Journal of Perinatology, Journal of Pediatrics and the American Journal of Perinatology. Dr. Fernandez is also a reviewer for numerous medical journals.She completed a fellowship in neonatology and a residency in pediatrics at the University of New Mexico School of Medicine, where she also earned her medical degree. She is board-certified in pediatrics and neonatal-perinatal medicine.Dr. Fernandez was a council member for the Western Society for Pediatric Research and a member of the Society of Pediatric Research.
