At Highland Pet Hospital, we offer all of the vaccines that your pet needs to prevent these dangerous diseases and give you peace of mind.
Veterinary Ophthalmology
The Canine Eye Registry Foundation (ERD), part of OFA, in the USA registers dogs that are found to be clear of eye problems by a board certified Veterinary Ophthalmologist (AVCO). There are many inherited ocular disorders such as cataracts, glaucoma, and retinal diseases. All breeds should have their eyes examined prior to breeding and on an annual basis thereafter, particularly if these dogs or their offspring are still in your breeding program.
Nutritional Counseling
Set reasonable goals and expectations. Your pet did not gain weight overnight, so it will take some time to lose the weight in a healthy way. Ideal weight loss for most pets is between 3-5% of their body weight per month until a healthy weight is achieved. So, a pet weighing 50 pounds should lose 1.5-2.5 pounds in the first month as an ideal goal.
Comprehensive Examination
Pets age 4-6 times faster than we do, so it’s important that we see your pet each year. Annual wellness exams help us ensure your pet remains healthy, and any early signs of disease are diagnosed before they become a major problem & expense.

Here in Florida, it is always flea and tick season. Certainly, fleas can present themselves as a bigger problem in our hot summer months, but it is never cold enough for fleas and ticks to no longer be a problem. Your pet needs to be protected from fleas and ticks all year round.
Behavioral Disorder Treatment
The FVRCP vaccine is a combination vaccine that protects your cat against feline viral rhinotracheitis, calicivirus and panleukopenia. Panleukopenia is often also called feline distemper- but it’s not related to distemper that can affect dogs. Actually, feline distemper is more closely related to canine parvovirus.

Regardless of size, there are a variety of joint problems found in most breeds. Hip dysplasia is probably the best known problem. This is a malformation of the ball and socket of the hip joint, found primarily in large breed dogs, which leads to premature development of arthritis in the hips. In many breeds, 30% and up of individuals may be affected.

According to the Association of Pet Obesity Prevention’s 2016 study, 54% of dogs and 59% of cats were either overweight or obese. Some breeds may be candidates for other health screens. These include testing for thyroid disease, von Willdebrand's disease (a bleeding disorder), heart disease, and deafness. In addition, dogs exhibiting or carrying genes for certain health problems felt to be inherited such as epilepsy, should not be bred.

OFA issues a rating (excellent, good or fair) and a certification number if the dog "passes". OFA will issue a preliminary rating for dogs less than 2 years of age to aid breeders in their decisions regarding their dog's future. The goal of using dogs in a breeding program with OFA certification is to reduce the incidence of dysplasia in your breed. Selecting dogs that are free of dysplasia and whose parents and relatives were also OFA certified will helpreduce the incidence of hip dysplasia in your lines over time. OFA will also certify elbows (for elbow dysplasia), shoulders (for OCD) and patellas (for patellar luxation) free for defects which can lead to debilitating disease.
Heart Disease Treatment
Heartworm disease is a serious and potentially fatal disease in pets in the United States and many other parts of the world. It is caused by foot-long worms (heartworms) that live in the heart, lungs and associated blood vessels of affected pets, causing severe lung disease, heart failure and damage to other organs in the body. Heartworm disease affects dogs, cats and ferrets, but heartworms also live in other mammal species, including wolves, coyotes, foxes, sea lions and—in rare instances—humans. Because wild species such as foxes and coyotes live in proximity to many urban areas, they are considered important carriers of the disease.

Earning a B.S. degree from Vanderbilt University in Biology and Chemistry, she continued working with veterinarians before joining Praxis Biologics, a pediatric vaccine manufacturer, and Merck Sharp & Dohme in Pharmaceutical Sales, learning about the medical drug industry before pursuing her dream as a veterinarian.
