New kitchen cabinet uppers include 100 year-old glass taken from the old windows that were replaced. Although it is kitchen cabinetry, the furniture look of the cherry hutch also brings back the past.

"Our architect recommended Acorn Custom Builders and indicated that if we could get Packey it would be worth the wait. It definitely was. He was instrumental in fixing some mistakes in the architect's drawings and talking us into more traditional brick pavers for our base versus the wood flooring previously suggested by the designer. It couldn't have worked out better."
Door Installation/Replacement
The renovation included a 2-story addition on the back and 2nd story over the garage, new siding, roofing, windows and doors, re-locating some interior walls, and all new wall and floor finishes for the entire house. The interior was completely gutted so all the insulation, most of the wiring and most of the plumbing is new. The 1st story work included a new kitchen, family room, mudroom, powder room, stairway, and heating and finishing the garage. The 2nd story work included a master suite, which is over the garage and extends into the new 2nd story part of the addition, 2 new bathrooms, and laundry room. New bluestone front porch and back patio, and some landscaping were also part of the project.

Our experience as seen on the Projects page includes homes of all ages and styles. Having worked on several historic homes, we learned to appreciate the architectural elements these homes showcase so well. Matching details in these homes requires custom work, adding both challenges and fun to each job. Homes built since WWII, while less ornate, were an improvement as far as the framing and systems went. These improvements continue with the ever increasing requirements of building codes. Whether building or remodeling your home, we won't skimp on details in the design or in the structural integrity of your home.
Tile Installation
This home is a seamless combination of its historic architectural features from 1905 and the modern day conveniences of today. I was lucky enough to be the designer for this project. Throughout the process a great deal of care was given to incorporating the Arts and Crafts elements of this home with the interior and exterior selections needed to update the home. Much of the tile work was completed with Sonoma hand-made decorative tiles. The fireplaces, bathrooms and kitchen incorporated geometric and nature-inspired decos reminiscent of the organic nature of the Prairie School of architecture. The woodwork and fireplace mantels reflect the original style of the moldings in the home. The white raised panel kitchen cabinetry combined with the hutch, plate rack and butcher-block island resembles the simple kitchen style of the period. The classic blue and white Wedgewood dishes popular during this era were the inspiration for the kitchen colors. The light fixtures were chosen to coordinate the simplicity of the architectural lines of the home with the ornamental designs of the tile work. All of the exterior and interior color selections were based on the colors of nature in keeping with the Wright concept of organic architecture.

“Packey has the knowledge and experience to successfully guide you through all aspects of a renovation, both large and small. For example, we handed him a picture of how we wanted an existing fireplace to be reworked and I’ll be damned if it didn’t look BETTER than the picture we gave him. He does incredible finish work and pays great attention to the little details. If you look at a lot of renovations like we had, you will see that details make or break the job. Packey is top notch.”

New Construction
Starting as a carpenter's apprentice in 1976, Packey A'Hearn (President of Acorn Custom Builders) gained valuable experience for the next 6 1/2 years before going into business for himself as a sole-proprietor with the name Acorn Remodeling. Along with a team of dedicated professional tradesmen, they were soon able to take on any residential construction project. Over the years, the jobs have grown but the attention to detail has not changed. In 1999, the business was incorporated and the name was changed to Acorn Custom Builders, Inc.
Demolition
"Packey worked closely with us and the architect to develop the final plans. The actual work would involve a fair amount of demolition including the removal of ceiling and roofs which would temporarily expose our house to the elements. Another factor was working with the elements of the existing house which were not exactly level or square (the original house was built circa 1917). Throughout the whole construction phase Packey took special care to get things just right as well as taking the extra steps to minimize any danger from the elements. He also made sure to keep us informed as to the pace and schedule of the work being done.

Landscaping and Fencing

Landscaping
The the 2-car garage was replaced with a 3-car heated garage, master suite added above it, brick added to the 1st story and stucco to the 2nd, and added various other features: copper dormers, cupola, and 2 balconies and more. Landscaping was also part of the project.
Driveways
The bay window was relocated to the back wall; the brick patio was extended. The driveway was replaced, as was the roof and electrical service. The back balcony above is accessed from the master bedroom.
Gazebos
"Packey A'Hearn was the general contractor for our back porch/veranda addition in 2005. The project was more than the traditional porch as we went crazy with an 850 sq ft covered design with double gazebos with very traditional columns. Our concept was for an open air Mediterranean feel with a lot of detail and Packey came through on the finish detail beyond our wildest expectations."

Window Installation/Replacement
All of our work is residential. We will do all types of construction, never wavering on our firm commitment to quality and customer satisfaction. Our projects range from small repairs, to kitchens, bathrooms, finished basements, and window replacements up to major remodeling renovations, additions, and new homes.
Siding
This was a typical 2-story, 4-bedroom home, with attached 2-car garage. The brick front and aluminum siding on the remaining elevations was also common fare.
Porches
All of the siding on this house is new cedar, 3” exposure clapboard on the 1st floor and 7” exposure shake on the 2nd floor. All rafter tails on the main roof are curved to match the original. This is most visible on the gables. There is another curve where the 2nd story shake starts. A band of trim between the floors pulls the first course of shake away from the wall, which then curves back to the wall over the next few courses. The shake corners were weaved as was traditionally done with shake. Douglas fir beaded ceiling was used on both porches with beaded ply for the soffits.
Residential Roof Repair
After replacing the entire roof plywood we installed a better one-piece roofing material folded up the wall and copper flashed properly to the house.
Residential Roof Replacement/Installation
The builder had used average materials when constructing the roof and deck, adequate to do the job, but didn't pay enough attention to the details. They relied on caulk to seal the joint between the roofing material and the brick house. This along with other poor methods used was a recipe for disaster showing up 8 years after the home was built.

Carpentry
"In addition to managing the job, Mr. A’Hearn is a master woodworker and crafted all of our moldings and carpentry matching the work exactly to existing 100 year old interior and exterior trim elements. This quality work takes time, and Mr. A’Hearn took the time and evidenced the expertise to construct the exterior and interior woodwork to the highest standards. Many people have commented that our addition looks like it is original to the house, something that could only be accomplished through the level of dedication and skilled expertise that we associate with Acorn Custom Builders."
Insulation
Masonry
Taking advantage of this wider than average lot the addition extended to the side as well as to the rear. The new wrap-around porch helped highlight the use of this extra space. This home like others of this era had only a 2nd floor hall bathroom and was without one on the 1st floor. The renovation included a 2-story addition on the side and back with a full basement under the back section. The 1st floor part of the renovation includes a new kitchen, family room, dining area, office, mudroom, bathroom, and closets. A back stairway was added as well as a family room masonry fireplace. The 2nd floor work included a new master suite with sleeping porch, and walk-in closet. A 2nd floor laundry room was also added. The wrap-around porch and rear cedar deck now extend their seasonal living space.
