There are several diseases and medications which can lower your ability to produce tears. Be sure to give your doctor a complete medical history. Oral contraceptive and allergy medications are two of many oral medications that can cause dry eyes. Patients with acne rosacea, diabetes, glaucoma, rheumatoid arthritis, and many other diseases can also have dry eyes.

According to a study published by the American Academy of Pediatrics, vision screenings were not attempted on more than 60 percent of the three-year old children in pediatricians’ offices. They found that in general, the younger the child, the less likely it was that a vision screening was attempted. (An attempt was defined as 10 or more seconds spent trying to get the child to cooperate with a vision screening.)

Diabetes primarily affects the blood vessels in the retina which is very sensitive to oxygen flow. These vessels work like tubes, bringing oxygen and other nutrients into and out of the eye. Damage to these vessels is called diabetic retinopathy where blood is leaked out from these weak vessels. Diabetic retinopathy develops gradually and painlessly.
