Emergency Care
Peace of mind is crucial during recovery. We are centrally located at 351 Hospital Rd in Newport Beach, California – right across the street from Hoag Memorial Hospital. Dr. Dickinson is frequently on call for his practice and for the Emergency Room. If questions, concerns or complications arise, you’ll be attended to quickly and within a safe environment.
Electrocardiogram
The patient needs to have medical clearance prior to surgery. Depending upon the patients age, lab work, electrocardiogram, and a chest x-ray may be necessary.

Yes. Frequently, after childbirth several times over, it is very difficult to regain the lower abdominal tone. This occurs because the normal anatomy of the rectus muscles become distorted. Instead of the rectus muscles running parallel to each other and in close proximity, the rectus muscles are splayed apart and there is a segment of abdominal wall which is not contracting. This space between the rectus muscles is called a rectus diastasis. This occurs from the stretching on the lower abdominal wall during pregnancy. One component of the abdominoplasty operation is the repair of the rectus diastasis. This component of the abdominoplasty is called rectus muscle plication. This is a very important component of abdominoplasty is people with lower abdominal wall laxity.

It’s very likely, yes. When any foreign object is placed in the body, the body forms a lining, or capsule, around it. In some patients and under certain circumstances the capsule that forms can thicken and contract aggressively. When this capsular contracture occurs around a soft breast implant, the breast may change contour and become firm. Capsular contracture can occur at any time after breast augmentation. When the capsular contracture causes the breast to become firm, painful, or interfere with mammography, the breast capsule should be removed.
Computed Tomography
Patients often have already had a CT-scan of the abdomen prior to consultation. The CT scan allows the patient and physician to review the abdominal anatomy and determine the size and location of the hernia, and determine what contents are within the hernia. Once the size and location of the hernia are understood, a surgical plan can be created to repair the hernia.
Chemotherapy
There are many different ways that a plastic and reconstructive surgeon is able to reconstruct the breast after a mastectomy. Which breast reconstruction method you choose or decide upon depends upon factors such as your general health, history of radiation to the mastectomy site, smoking history, need for chemotherapy post mastectomy and prior operations on the breast or in the abdomen. Below are some of the more common types of breast reconstruction...
Radiation Therapy
Often the first step in breast reconstruction is to determine if you are going to have a lumpectomy or a mastectomy to treat your breast cancer. In general, a lumpectomy can safely be performed and the aesthetic outcome excellent if you have a tumor that is relatively small in proportion to a larger breast. If you have a lumpectomy and have a breast cancer, you will need radiation therapy after your lumpectomy to complete the oncologic treatment. If you have ductal carcinoma in situ (DCIS), which is a “pre-cancer” there may be a possibility that you do not need radiation after lumpectomy depending upon the grade of DCIS, the size of DCIS, your age, and the margins. In some situations, you may be able to have radiation therapy delivered intra-operatively at the time of your lumpectomy. Depending upon the type of cancer and status of your lymph nodes you may need chemotherapy prior to your breast cancer surgery or after your breast cancer surgery. Navigating the oncologic treatment of breast cancer and trying to understand decisions to maximize your aesthetic result can be extremely confusing. This is confounded by the fact that a breast cancer diagnosis in itself can be extremely confusing. What is important is to just keep things simple as you go through the process. We understand the process is confusing. After you have a consultation with us, you are always welcome to call the office if you have questions and you are always welcome to come back to the office for a second consultation if there are more questions. Over time, as you meet, speak, and listen to your oncologic surgeon, your medical oncologist, your radiation oncologist, and your plastic surgeon you will hear similar words and terms over and over again and eventually the process will make sense.

General Surgery
The other type of hernia that I repair and which I enjoy are large hernias of the abdominal wall that would require component separation or some additional reconstruction or repair of the abdominal wall. Typically, these patients have had complex intraabdominal surgeries or multiple abdominal surgeries or hernia surgeries themselves that have recurred. These abdominal wall reconstructions are often repaired in conjunction with the general surgery team and require a hospital stay. The discussion below applies to these types of abdominal wall reconstructions.
Wound Care
Wound dehiscence is common in patients who have a BMI which is higher than normal. It can also occur when protein intake is low or there are nutritional deficiencies present. Wound dehisences are treated with local wound care or often a return to the operating room to debride and close the wounds.
Reconstructive Surgery
There are many ways in which to repair an orbital floor fracture. Frequently, a small piece of mesh can be placed in the floor of the orbit to re-stabilize the eye. In young individuals who are active, I sometimes prefer to use a piece of cartilage from the ear to buttress the eye. Every facial reconstructive surgery will depend on the individual’s facial trauma and age.

Eyelid Surgery
Now, more than ever, people are working from home and attending Zoom calls, which gives us ample opportunity to analyze our facial features closely. This could be one reason why Board-certified surgeons are now seeing more patients in their 20s, 30s, and 40s looking to have eyelid surgery and neck lifts.
Liposuction
Liposuction is an extremely common cosmetic procedure in the United States ranking among the most common cosmetic procedure performed. Liposuction is also a very common procedure in my practice. There are many reasons why a patient chooses to undergo liposuction. The most common reason and often the most effective indication for the procedure are localized deposits of fat despite regular exercise and proper diet. These are the so called “problem areas” that despite tight diet and exercise it is hard for us to get rid of the fat in these areas or when we do so it is only transiently. These areas are commonly the “submental” fat deposit in the neck, the “bra fat” area that hangs above the back of the bra line, the “love handle” on the abdominal flanks, the “muffin top” over the front of the cut-off jean shorts, or simply the layer of padding on top of the abdominal “six-pack”. In these areas, with extremely strict diet and exercise for months and yielding a good result, only a weekend of pizza, pasta, and French fries is enough to undo months’ worth of hard work. If this scenario describes your issues, then liposuction will be very helpful to you.
Breast Augmentation
The Recovery: Capsular contracture and implant replacement surgery is usually more extensive than primary breast augmentation. While post-operative pain may be managed, women can be back to light work within a matter of days. Strenuous physical activity is not recommended for 4-6 weeks following this surgery as this may increase risk for hematoma and repeat capsule formation.
Breast Reduction
Bilateral mastopexy is a common procedure to place the breasts in a more youthful position. With age or from a genetic predisposition a patient may have a breast or nipple areola complex that is in a much lower position than would be normally. There are no exercises or any special diet that a person can eat to make their breasts return to a more natural or youthful position. In these cases, the best option is to perform a bilateral mastopexy and/or breast reduction to both lift the breast into a higher position and/or reduce the size of the breast. The mastopexy and breast reduction surgeries are performed under a general anesthetic. The overall satisfaction rate with breast reduction and mastopexy is quite high.
Breast Lift
These types of combination procedures are very effective when performed in the same aesthetic region, such as the rhinoplasty and neck/chin liposuction or the breast lift with liposuction of the bra fat.
Rhinoplasty
It is important when performing aesthetic surgery of the nose to make sure that the nose remains in excellent proportion with the face. Occasionally, the nasal bones can be fractured by hard objects that fall from the sky such as coconuts. Typically, when performing an infracture or re-positioning of the nasal bones, it is important to make sure the width of the dorsum is in proportion to the width of the nasal base. There should also be a smooth transition from the nasal dorsum into the lower lateral cartilages so that the nose does not have a done appearance. The radix must also have an appropriate take-off from the lash line to establish an appropriate nasal length. The amount of tip projection as well as the columelar-labial angle can also be changed to provide refinement of the nasal tip or establish an amount of nostril show. I am very thankful to have learned rhinoplasty surgery from world rhinoplasty expert Dr. Jay Calvert. He is truly a great mentor and teacher.

Plastic Surgery

Face Lift
Removing the overhanging abdominal pannus or reducing the size of pendulous breasts that cause identifiable medical signs and symptoms may be partially covered by insurance companies. Loose skin around the arms or in the medial thighs are less likely to be covered by insurance. Excess skin in the neck or jowls of the face are corrected only by a facelift and are not covered by insurance.
Neck Lift
A neck lift involves making an incision behind the ears and sometimes under the chin to create a smooth and youthful neck. This procedure is a popular option among some younger patients who have lost elasticity in their chin and neck area and are noticing excess drooping skin, but have not developed jowls or descent of the cheek. A neck lift is a great option for those who can’t seem to rid themselves of excess fat stored under their chin. The benefits of this procedure are scars behind the ears and minimal to no scarring in front of the ear. The limitations are that it may not be suitable for candidates with larger necks or jowls. The incision can sometimes be modified to include just the lower portion of the earlobe.
Blepharoplasty
A blepharoplasty surgery is a procedure that repairs drooping upper eyelids and may involve removing excess skin, muscle, and fat.
Abdominoplasty
Recovery after panniculectomy or abdominoplasty usually takes about 4-6 weeks before returning to exercise. Drains are often used for a short time post surgery.
Nose Surgery

Breast Surgery

Cosmetic Surgery
When you hear “facelift,” you probably think of a woman with her skin pulled back very tightly. If you happen to Google “what is a facelift?”, the Oxford dictionary will tell you: a facelift is a cosmetic surgery to remove unwanted wrinkles by tightening the skin of the face. But, what if we told you that a facelift shouldn’t be called a “facelift,” but instead a neck and jowl lift? It’s true! The procedure involves a surgeon cutting along the front of the ear and hairline and then tightening the skin and muscle to smooth out the jawline and neck sagging.

Chemical Peels
Chemical peels are a treatment in which a chemical solution is applied to the skin to remove the damaged outer layers of the skin’s surface. The VI Peel, a chemical peel we use in our Newport Beach clinic, is a highly concentrated solution comprised of three different acids along with vitamin A and C. Most peels are typically a solution of 1 acid.

Week 6-8: Between six and eight weeks after surgery, the patient is sent for physical therapy. Between six and eight weeks, the abdominal binder is removed. The patient begins isometric core strengthening at the six week mark and continues isometric core strengthening before initiating motions with more excursion.
