Arthritis is an inflammatory condition that can have a profound impact on joints in the body, including the toes. The two forms of arthritis that affect the toes areÂ osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis. Osteoarthritis is often a result of wear and tear on the joints, where the protective cartilage at the ends of bones gradually deteriorates. When this occurs in the toes, it can lead to pain, stiffness, and a reduced range of motion. Walking and performing everyday tasks can become difficult. In contrast, rheumatoid arthritis is an autoimmune disorder in which the immune system mistakenly attacks the joints, including those in the toes. This autoimmune response triggers inflammation and swelling, and can even lead to deformities in the affected toes. Over time, the toe joints may suffer significant damage, further diminishing their functionality. This may cause chronic pain and mobility issues that can affect overall foot health. Basic activities such as walking, standing, or even wearing certain types of shoes can become challenging and painful. To address these issues effectively, it's suggested that you make an appointment with a podiatrist. I cannot say enough about how much I respect and adore Dr. Dalrymple! I had first gone to her for Plantar fasciitis and she thoroughly explained to me exactly what was going on in my and she had explained about the injection I would be getting. She is very thorough and gentle when giving the injections. I later needed surgery on my foot and she put me at ease thru the whole process as I was nervous about surgery. Dr. Putnam treats patients of all ages. Her professional interests include sports medicine, trauma, wound care, preventative medicine, and general podiatric medicine including bunions, hammertoe deformities, arthritic conditions, plantar fasciitis, and painful flatfoot conditions. Working to get patients back to their level of daily activity is at the center of her care. Dr. Putnam is now excited to be returning to New England. She is a Red Sox fan, enjoys hiking, water skiing, being outside and playing Ultimate Frisbee.

Bunions
If you have arthritis, frequently wear tight fitting shoes such as high heels, and are older in age, itâ€™s very likely that you may develop a bunion. A bony hump at the base of the big toe is the biggest sign that you may have developed this condition. Bunions are often painful and typically cause an extreme amount of discomfort. Because a bunion protrudes on the side of the foot, itâ€™s likely for it to continuously rub against the inside of your shoe. This causes frequent friction and pain, which may cause calluses to form as well.
Ingrown Toenails
Signs that may indicate the formation of an ingrown toenail include redness, pain, swelling of the surrounding skin, possible bleeding or oozing of pus, and an overgrowth of the skin around the nail. The surrounding skin may also feel tender and become swollen or hardened. Most ingrown toenails are diagnosed by a simple physical exam; however, an x-ray may be required to show how deep the nail has grown into the skin of the toe.
Reconstructive Surgery
Dr. Sara Putnam grew up in Longmeadow, Massachusetts and graduated with her Bachelor of Science from Gettysburg College in Pennsylvania. After receiving her Doctorate at Dr. William M. Scholl College of Podiatric Medicine in Chicago, she completed a 3-year surgical residency at Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center where she was extensively trained in both forefoot and rear foot elective and reconstructive surgery.

Corns
Corns and calluses are hard layers of skin that usually form due to friction. Generally, they will be in areas of the foot that are bearing weight, or areas that frequently rub against the shoe. Soft corns are typically found between the toes.

Many patients have experienced severe foot discomfort due to bunions, plantar warts, hammertoes, stress fractures, blisters, ingrown toenails, and corns and calluses, to name a few. Foot pain is often associated with the following symptoms: swelling, redness, warmth, tenderness, discoloration, stiffness, as well as burning, tingling, and numbing sensations. It may help to check the feet daily for any abnormalities or deformities that may be causing the foot pain. Treatment for foot pain will vary on a case by case basis, along with the recovery process.
Fungus
Fungal toenails form due to an infection that gets in between either the cracks in the nail or possible cuts on the surrounding skin. When this occurs, itâ€™s likely to discolor and thicken the nail; this makes it hard to care for or trim. The nail itself may also become brittle and could potentially crumble. The fungus under the nail may build over time, separating the nail from the bed and ultimately causing it to fall off if not treated properly.

Orthotics are especially useful for those with foot pain and those who may have fallen arches. Orthotics may help properly reposition the structures of the foot, easing the pressure and rebalancing the distribution of weight on the feet. Those with arthritic feet or those experiencing pain due to plantar fasciitis may find relief with orthotics, as they also tend to find issues with arch complications. Orthotics are a great way to give your feet extra support, which can come in handy for those who tend to stand or work on their feet for the majority of the day. The next type of patient who made aid in the use of orthotics are those with diabetes. Itâ€™s more likely for those with diabetes to develop corns and calluses. When this occurs, the friction of the corn or callus against your footwear can be extremely uncomfortable and painful. Orthotics, in this instance, can be useful in reducing the pressure placed upon the affected areas.

Hammertoes get their name due to the abnormal appearance of the toe, in which it bends down like a hammer. A hammertoeâ€™s shape is formed by a deformed bending in the toeâ€™s middle joint. There are many factors that play into how hammertoes form. Trauma to the toe, such as stubbing, jamming, or breaking it, can make the toe more susceptible to developing into a hammertoe. Age and gender also influence the likelihood of getting a hammertoe. Women have also been known to be more likely to develop a hammertoe compared to men. Youâ€™re also more likely to develop this condition as you age. Certain diseases, such as arthritis and diabetes, have been known to influence the likelihood of forming a hammertoe.
