AcuitusAbout Education has evolved little over the past hundred and fifty years. Technology has profoundly transformed nearly every profession, from doctors and farmers to factory workers and soldiers, yet teaching remains largely unaffected. Despite education being the second largest sector of our economy, the educational system, conceived in the 19th century, has remained remarkably unchanged in a world most clearly characterized by advancement. Perhaps this system met the needs of World War II America ; it clearly falls far short of meeting the needs of a diverse, global, information-centric, high-technology society. Acuitus was founded in 1999 to develop technology that would be central to the process of education and that would serve as a foundation for revolutionizing the profession of teaching and the process of education. Our initial objective is to create a computer-based personal tutor that is in the genre of Aristotle with Alexander, Galileo with Cosimo de' Medici, Ann Sullivan with Helen Keller or the Top Gun instructors with the best of the Navy's pilots. Building on the work of Benjamin Bloom and his colleagues at the University of Chicago, our goal is to develop a Digital Tutor that works with the vast majority of students, will improve their performance by two standard deviations and will eliminate the historical correlation between aptitude and achievement, so that all students excel effortlessly.
