Having an abscess on the toe can be a painful and annoying experience. A toe abscess may be caused by germs or oil in the toe, a hair follicle, or a skin puncture. An abscess is a sign of infection causing the sore to fill with pus and other fluids. Inflammation sets in, and the toe becomes red and painful to the touch. Ignoring a toe abscess can lead to more serious infections within the entire body. Before a podiatrist can treat an abscess, certain information is needed, including how long the abscess has been there and whether the toe was injured. If the abscess is advanced, the podiatrist will proceed to make a small cut to drain it, and then will flush the area with an antiseptic solution. A bandage will be applied to guard against further infection, and pain medication may be prescribed. One way to prevent another toe abscess is to maintain daily foot hygiene habits. Ingrown Toenails
Podiatrists perform foot and ankle surgery to treat a number of different conditions. These may include bunions, heel pain, flat feet, arthritis of the foot or ankle, sports injuries, hammertoes, ingrown toenails, complications due to diabetes, and fractures, to name a few. This means they might not even feel when they have an ulcer on their foot. If the wound becomes severely infected, amputation may be necessary. Therefore, it is of the upmost importance to properly care for any and all foot wounds.
Calluses
Many patients have experienced severe foot discomfort due to bunions, plantar warts, hammertoes, stress fractures, blisters, ingrown toenails, and corns and calluses, to name a few. Foot pain is often associated with the following symptoms: swelling, redness, warmth, tenderness, discoloration, stiffness, as well as burning, tingling, and numbing sensations. It may help to check the feet daily for any abnormalities or deformities that may be causing the foot pain. Treatment for foot pain will vary on a case by case basis, along with the recovery process.
Fungus
Fungal toenails form due to an infection that gets in between either the cracks in the nail or possible cuts on the surrounding skin. Achilles Tendonitis
A condition that often results in serious heel pain is known as Achilles tendonitis. This condition may form when the Achilles tendon is damaged as a result of overuse. This particular injury can be very serious, as the Achilles tendonâ€™s main function is to connect the lower half of the calf muscles to the heel bone. If this tendon becomes damaged, it may result in difficulty walking and completing everyday tasks, as well as cause extreme discomfort and pain.

Hammertoes get their name due to the abnormal appearance of the toe, in which it bends down like a hammer. A hammertoeâ€™s shape is formed by a deformed bending in the toeâ€™s middle joint. There are many factors that play into how hammertoes form. Trauma to the toe, such as stubbing, jamming, or breaking it, can make the toe more susceptible to developing into a hammertoe. Age and gender also influence the likelihood of getting a hammertoe. Women have also been known to be more likely to develop a hammertoe compared to men. Youâ€™re also more likely to develop this condition as you age. Certain diseases, such as arthritis and diabetes, have been known to influence the likelihood of forming a hammertoe.

A heel spur is a bony protrusion that occurs on the heel. It is often confused with plantar fasciitis, which is inflammation of the plantar fascia ligament. When a heel spur is painful it can make it quite difficult to walk.

Foot Neuroma
Morton's neuroma is a painful foot condition that commonly affects the areas between the second and third or third and fourth toe, although other areas of the foot are also susceptible. Mortonâ€™s neuroma is caused by an inflamed nerve in the foot that is being squeezed and aggravated by surrounding bones.
Plantar Fasciitis
When small tears occur on the fascia, it may become inflamed, especially if too much pressure is put on the tissue. Itâ€™s extremely important that you seek professional help as soon as you feel any type of foot pain. If plantar fasciitis is left untreated, thereâ€™s a high chance you may develop chronic heel plan. You may also develop other issues connected with your foot, knee, hip, or back, all due to the body walking differently to relieve pain felt from plantar fasciitis.
Podiatric Deformities
Mortonâ€™s neuroma, known as intermetatarsal neuroma, is an inflamed nerve in the ball of the foot, typically behind the third and fourth toes. It can occur from wearing tight shoes or from having foot deformities. Mortonâ€™s neuroma presents itself as pain, swelling, numbness, tingling, or burning of the front of the foot. Those who have had this condition liken it to the feeling of walking on a pebble or rolled-up sock. This nerve is sensitive to excessive weight on the foot and scar tissue can form around the nerve and sometimes enlarge it. Those who wear high heels or tight-fitting shoes are susceptible to this condition. Treatments vary by the severity of Morton's neuroma. Resting the foot, cushioning the ball of the foot with padding, and wearing orthotics to take pressure off of the nerve can help. If more conservative treatment does not relieve discomfort, surgery can be performed to remove the inflamed nerve segment. If you are suffering from pain in your midfoot, it is suggested that you make an appointment with a podiatrist for a proper diagnosis and a treatment plan that is customized to your situation.
