        G ray Mortuary, Inc. had its beginnings as the Welborn Funeral Home in the early 1900's and was owned by Walter L. Welborn. The funeral home was operated from the back of the Welborn Furniture Company located in Pelzer, South Carolina. Samuel Lee Gray, a funeral director and embalmer from Anniston, Alabama, came to Pelzer, South Carolina to work at the funeral home and purchased it from the Welborn family in 1934, changing the name to Gray Mortuary, Inc. The business was moved to West Pelzer and operated from 45 Main Street for many years. In 1952, the establishment was moved next door to its current location. This new building is reported to be one of the first funeral homes in this area that was built from the ground up to be a funeral home. In 1985 a formal chapel was added and an addition expansion, which is mainly used for visitation, was constructed in 1999. Gray Mortuary and its staff of loyal, dedicated, and honest employees serves the people of Anderson and Greenville counties and the surrounding areas with compassion, dignity, and pride.

        Anderson/Atlanta Take Interstate 85 North and exit at SC exit 32 (SC Highway 8).Turn right onto Highway 8 and Gray Mortuary is approximately 5 miles on the left. From Columbia Take Interstate 26 to Interstate 385 (towards Greenville). Stay on Interstate 385 to SC exit 23 (SC Highway 418). Turn left onto Highway 418 and continue for approximately 12 miles. Cross over SC Highway 25. This will put you on SC Highway 8. Gray Mortuary is located approximately 5 miles on the right.

        My grandmother was a long time...

        My grandmother was a long time resident of Williamston and loved Mrs. Gray and her family. She would not ever think of using another mortuary. This past weekend she past away and per her wishes we would only use Gray's. When she was picked up from the hospice house the gentleman was so kind and my Nannie always had a peppermint before bed everynight, will guess who had a peppermint with him that night and he laid it with her before he left the room. Just a special touch for a special lady and a kind gesture to a family grieving the loss of a loved one. Gray's did a wonderful job making her last wishes special and guiding the family in making decisions. A special thank you to all the staff and especially to the Gray family for being so kind!
