ORourke Bros. Memorials and Abate Monuments - Serving the Greater Salem Areas Communities for Over 100 Years. A the beginning of the 20th Century, ORourke Bros. Memorials employed as many as 30 stone craftsmen and monument builders. Using their own train spur, ORourke Bros. Memorials would have large blocks of granite delivered from the Quincy Quarries, as well as from Vermont. From there, the workers would saw the granite into desired shapes, using hand-tools to create beautiful carvings. Many of the techniques used back then were laborious and physically demanding, requiring a high level of craftsmanship. Today, modern manufacturing techniques reduce a lot of the hand-sawing and shaping of headstones, however many hand-carving techniques are still used today.
