X-rays
Taking dental x-rays or radiographs is essential for diagnosing dental disease and concerns. These radiographs show teeth, bones and soft tissue to help dentists determine if there are caries or hidden dental problems such as bone loss that cannot be seen when looking into a mouth. Taking dental x-rays can also help catch dental disease early to prevent pain and expensive dental treatment.

Teeth Cleaning
That’s why dentists recommend that teeth be cleaned professionally twice a year. Teeth cleaning is the removal of dental plaque and tartar in order to prevent cavities, gingivitis and gum disease. The average dental cleaning is a routine procedure that is rarely painful and takes 30 to 45 minutes.

This individual came to us with concerns of worn, discolored teeth. He wanted to have a youthful smile again. Because of his grinding habits, we had to carefully plan his case. We balanced his bite so that forces could be distributed amongst all teeth as opposed to individual teeth that could potentially break our veneers. Six monolithic E.max veneers were placed canine to canine. This type of veneer not only provided the cosmetics he desired, but also the strength.
Crowns
We may begin to change our diet to more comfort foods to cope with stress. This may introduce more sugars and acidity to the oral environment that will inevitably cause harm to our teeth and existing restorations (ie fillings and crowns). Teeth are extremely susceptible to decay under acidic conditions. The outer “strong” layer of our teeth, enamel, will begin to demineralize under the constant acidic assault. This demineralization will eventually lead to a softer layer allowing for bacteria to eventually degrade into the nutrient rich dentin and pulp, causing sensitivity and pain. Our restorations (ie crowns, fillings) will also begin to fail under these acidic conditions. The bonds (resin or cement) that hold these restorations will fail and bacteria will gradually seep under these restorations, causing harm to tooth structure under the restorations, hence failure of the restorations. Finally, our root surfaces, that are not as “strong” as the tops of our teeth (enamel) will begin to erode under these acidic conditions, leading to sensitivity and pain.

Root Canal Treatment
Root canal therapy is a treatment used to save a tooth when the tissue, blood vessels and nerves inside of a tooth have become inflamed. In order to save the tooth and remove the pain, the dentist will need to remove infected and diseased tissue to help clean out the infected area. The canal inside is then medicated to allow the surrounding area to heal.

Deep Cleaning

Dentures
Dentures and partial dentures are removable dental appliances that are used to replace teeth that are missing. Full dentures offer artificial teeth to those that have lost all of their teeth on either the upper or lower arch of their mouth. Obtaining a denture will restore function and appearance to those who have lost all of their teeth. Dentures allow many patients to eat, speak and improve the appearance of their mouth. Partial dentures are recommended for those who have not lost all of their teeth and have some teeth remaining. The partial denture will consist of artificial teeth that will replace missing teeth and metal clasps that clip on to remaining teeth to help hold it in place.

Dental Implants
If you previously had few or no teeth, or an uncomfortable ill-fitting bridge or plate, after your All-on-4® treatment is complete, you’ll notice the difference. You’ll be able to eat, bite and chew normally again. You’ll need to consume soft foods for the first three months after your All-on-4® surgery until your new implants have completely fused (‘osseointegrated’) with your jaw bone.

Invisalign Orthodontics
When you and dentist decide that Invisalign is a good treatment for you, your dentist will take impressions and radiographs of your teeth so a treatment plan can be created for you. Your dentist will show you how your teeth will move and shift as your treatment comes along. Depending on the severity of your case, treatment time is variable.
Braces
How do you brush your teeth? Do you brush in a straight line or circles? What kind of bristles do you use? Are the bristles on your toothbrush frayed? When you brush in a circle, you are sweeping all along the gum line, removing the plaque from most angles. When you brush in a straight line, you may often miss the concave portion of the gums. This leaves plaque behind and leads to gingivitis. Whenever gingivitis occurs, the body attacks supporting structures like bone while trying to get rid of the infection. This is periodontal disease, which can cause recession. Recession may also result from an irritant on the gums, such as a bar from a partial denture or orthodontic appliance (braces).

Teeth Whitening
Tooth Whitening is a popular procedure done to brighten your smile. First, speak with your dentist to see if whitening is a good option for you. Depending on the type of discoloration that is present on your teeth, whitening may or may not be effective. Common reasons for teeth discoloration result from using tobacco, staining from food or drinks and poor oral hygiene. Tooth whitening is most effective on surface stains. Although whitening is helpful for the appearance of teeth, it is not permanent and stains may recur over time.
Cosmetic Dentistry
This is not the time for elective dentistry (ie. Cleanings and cosmetic dentistry). Dentists will be available for true emergencies (if you are experiencing pain, infection, etc.). We have had strong recommendations from our governing bodies, (the American Dental Association and California Dental Association) to do this because we can rapidly spread the disease due to the viral aerosols we may create. These aerosols not only infect you, but our staff, whom most don’t have the proper protection (N95 masks, etc.). Plus any N95 masks (my practice does not have any) should be donated to our local hospitals.
General Dentistry
Dr. Crow is a Board Certified Periodontist and a member of the American Academy of Periodontology with over 20 years of experience in the field of dentistry. After graduating from the University of Pittsburgh School of Dental Medicine, he received an additional year of hospital based training by completing a General Practice Residency at the Naval Medical Center in Portsmouth,Va. After five years practicing general dentistry, Dr. Crow returned to school and completed a three year residency in Periodontics. During that same time, he earned a Masters of Science degree in Health Sciences from The George Washington University. After seven years in private practice in the Seattle area, he returned to San Diego where he maintains a practice limited to Periodontics and Implant Dentistry. Dr. Crow is married and has two children; a son and a daughter. During his free time, he enjoys his children’s sports and activities, as well as scuba diving, snow skiing, traveling, and flying as an instrument rated pilot.
