We had been taking our dog Brisco to Dr. Kumar for 9 years for regular year exams and vaccinations, as well as flea and heartworm treatments. Brisco never had any major health issues. When Brisco was 10 years old, our groomer noticed a growth on Brisco’s side. We called Dr. Kumar to ask about it and Dr. Kumar said we would have to bring him in to be examined and advised there was probably nothing we could do at home. About 10 days later we took Brisco for his annual physical and shots. At this point Brisco had started scratching the lump so it had become a little irritated. Dr. Kumar recommended surgery to remove the mass. No explanation or concern was offered up. I didn’t know to ask for a biopsy or to even ask what he thought was wrong. The surgery was performed a few days later and when I picked Brisco up, no one was there to offer any information. They simply took my money and gave me my dog.
About 6 weeks later I noticed Brisco was not having regular bowel movements, but we still eating and drinking and active. Within a few days, his appetite seemed to deteriorate and he started vomiting. I called Dr. Kumar and he said he was concerned about Brisco’s appetite and that I should bring him in.
During this visit Dr. Kumar’s techs were examining Brisco and finding more small growths, which Dr. Kumar seemed to be focusing on this instead of the loss of weight and vomiting. His only comments were that he could remove some more of the growths and send them out for biopsy because it might be cancer. During this conversation he confirmed he never sent the original mass out and that “he should have done that”.
I left without any treatment for Brisco’s immediate health issues. Upon the recommendation of our groomer, we took Brisco to a different vet for a second opinion. The new vet immediately gave Brisco IV fluids and took x-rays and bloodwork. They found his kidneys weren’t working and that he was in renal failure. Extraordinary care was provided for several days by two different vet clinics for several days, but we lost Brisco a few days later.
I never felt Dr. Kumar listened when I tried to tell him what was going on with Brisco and at no point did he ever call to check on Brisco during this time. I feel he was more focused on cutting out growths and trying to rectify the fact he never checked for cancer months earlier. There was little to no communication. I’ll never know if Brisco had cancer and if the cancer led to his death, but I believe Dr. Kumar was negligent in his care of my dog.

Professional and caring, Dr. Kumar and his staff really love animals and it shows. Tammie even gave me her cell number if I needed anything or had more questions. I took my border collie, Bullet, in to see him because he has a bad limp, turned out he was fine. We have been taking Bullet to see Dr Kumar for two years now, and we look forward to a long and healthy life for our smart boy!
