Although, it is sometimes difficult to determine the extent of the crack, especially when it occurs under a filling or crown, early diagnosis is important. Root Canal Treatment
Dr. Michael J. Lewis received his DMD degree from the University of Pennsylvania in 2004. Following the completion of his General Practice Residency training at Long Island College Hospital in 2005 he undertook two years of postgraduate specialty training in Endodontics at NYU School of Dental Medicine. In recognition of his published clinical case work Dr Lewis was selected to serve as an online moderator at EndoLit.com, a website where endodontists can connect, share clinical cases and discuss current endodontic literature. He is a frequent speaker on the dental lecture circuit. Dr Lewis is a coauthor of the recently published AAE position statement on Maxillary Sinusitis of Endodontic Origin. Dr Lewis also serves as a clinical attending at Hackensack University Medical Center where he trains dental residents in the art and science of endodontics.
Apicoectomy
An apicoectomy may be performed under local anesthesia. It is typically a straightforward procedure during which an incision is made in the gum tissue above the root of the involved tooth. This is to expose the inflamed or infected tissue surrounding the root tip of the tooth. Once uncovered, the damaged tissue in the area is removed along with a few millimeters of the tooth’s root tip. A biocompatible filling material is then placed in the end of the remaining portion of the root to seal it and prevent any possibility of reinfection. The gum tissue flap is put back into place and sutured to complete the procedure.

Dental Implants
Occasionally, dental defects or pathology that deem a tooth non-restorable will be revealed on a CBCT scan. If this happens, the endodontist will advise you that the tooth cannot be saved.
