Pediatric Care
We diagnose and treat eye conditions in children of all ages, including but not limited to strabismus (lazy eye), nasal lacrimal duct obstruction, epiblepharon, ptosis (drooping lids) and other congenital deformities, and refractive errors necessitating glasses and contact lenses.

Other Diseases We Treat: We treat glaucoma, pediatric eye disease, macular degeneration and offer preventive eye care for all ages. We are on staff at the Shrewsbury Surgery Center, which is conveniently located across the street from our office, Riverview Medical Center, one of the finest hospitals in New Jersey and Center for Ambulatory and Minimally Invasive Surgery (CAMIS) in Eatontown. Our practice takes all our own calls for after-hour emergencies as well as coverage call for the hospital. Right to Sight and Health - a nonprofit organization established in 2007 by Dr. Macdonald and his colleagues that provides eye-care to underserved people in the developing world. Dr. Macdonald has organized over 30 missions to underserved countries such as Ghana, Senegal, Rwanda, Tanzania, Cameroon, Nicaragua, and the Philippines. He also is the volunteer ophthalmologist at the Parker Family Health Center in Red Bank, which cares for over 10,000 uninsured patients. He is a member of the Board of Trustees. [raw]

Ophthalmology
After two more graduations, I finally returned home to join a talented and bright ophthalmologist, Dr. William Caldwell. Over the years I have been fortunate to have worked with other fine eye doctors, such as the late Dr. Michael Lichtig, who we all miss, Dr. Tracey Lewis who is now practicing in Florida and Dr. Judith Simon, who is now Professor and Chairman of the Department of Ophthalmology at the Tamale Teaching Hospital in Ghana.
Macular Degeneration
We diagnose all retinal diseases including but not limited to macular degeneration, vitreous and retinal detachments, retinal artery and vein occlusions, and diabetic retinopathy.
Laser Eye Surgery
Dr. Macdonald was instrumental in bring LASIK and PRK surgery to Riverview Medical Center and was the first doctor to use the VISX Laser in Monmouth County. He subsequently formed the Clearsight Laser Center which acquired the WaveLight Allegretto Wave Eye-Q Laser.
Cataracts
Nuclear Sclerotic Cataract – This is the most common type of cataract that occurs with aging. The natural lens becomes more dense and brownish in coloration.
Cataract Surgery
Cataract surgery can now be performed with a femtosecond laser. The LenSx ® femtosecond laser adds precision of “laser” to most parts of cataract.

In 2000 I joined forces with Riverview Medical Center, now part of Meridian Health, to open the Shrewsbury Surgery Center. This facility is on Shrewsbury Avenue across from our office and is where we do most of our surgeries, including cataract, corneal transplants, DSEK, and cosmetic and reconstructive surgery.

Plastic Surgeons

Botox
Dr. Donald Macdonald completed a Fellowship in Oculoplastic and Recontructive Surgery at both the New York Eye and Ear Infirmiry and the Manhattan Eye, Ear, Nose and Throat Hospital. He was the first physician in New Jersey to use Botox to treat hemifacial spasm and blepharospasm, many years before it was approved for cosmetic use. Dr. Macdonald also has expertise removing malignant eyelid and orbital tumors and reconstruction utilizing various skin, muscle and fat grafts as well and flaps. He is an expert on removing growth, both benign and malignant, from the eye, including ptergium and chalazion. He also is an expert on lacrimal duct diseases, of which the most common is a blocked tear duct in newborns and dacryocystitis in adults.

Dr. Macdonald is also highly trained at many cosmetic procedures, including upper and lower blepharoplasties. We have lasers for hair removal and provide skin resurfacing with microdermabrasion, and skin rejuvenation with Restylane and Botox.
