Sleep Disorders
Narcolepsy is a chronic sleep disorder, or dyssomnia, characterized by excessive daytime sleepiness (EDS) in which a person experiences extreme fatigue and possibly falls asleep at inappropriate times, such as while at work or at school. Narcoleptics usually experience disturbed nocturnal sleep and an abnormal daytime sleep pattern, which is often confused with insomnia. When a narcoleptic falls asleep they generally experience the REM stage of sleep within 10 minutes; whereas most people do not experience REM sleep until after 30 minutes.

Jami received an Associate’s Degree of Science from Gainesville College in 2001. She then went to Brenau University where she obtained her Bachelor’s of Science in Nursing in 2003. She began her nursing career at Gwinnett Medical Center in the Emergency Department as an adult and pediatric nurse, becoming trauma specialized with TNCC and CEN certifications. While working at Gwinnett Medical, Jami completed her Master’s Degree as a Family Nurse Practitioner from Brenau University in 2015.

This will involve a complete evaluation of the patient’s symptoms, their impact on their daily living, and the incidence of disease flare-ups. We, at Pulmonary and Sleep Specialists of Northeast Georgia, are skilled in pleural procedures and offer evaluation and management of pleural effusions in the office setting. Our onsite chest X-ray can diagnose the effusion. We then use in-office ultrasound to guide and perform thoracentesis (aspiration of the fluid) safely. This usually results in immediate relief of symptoms especially the shortness of breath.

Dr. Rami Arfoosh has initiated and currently moderates the multi-disciplinary chest board meeting at NGHS. This board consists of a panel of several physicians from different specialties including pulmonary, thoracic surgery, oncology, radiation oncology, pathology, radiology, and interventional radiology. Any screening findings that are suspicious for lung cancer goes through this panel to review and make the best recommendations possible regarding the next step. Navigational bronchoscopy is a new cutting edge technology that uses existing CT images to create a 3D road map for specialists to navigate and approach lung lesions that need to be biopsied without a single cut to the patient.
