Veterinary Ophthalmology
Dr. Kari Wittmer, a Coon Rapids native, has owned and operated Andover Animal Hospital since its opening in 2007. She obtained her undergraduate degree at the University of Wisconsin-River Falls and completed her Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) degree at the University of Minnesota in 2001. Her areas of interest include wellness care, developing lasting relationships with her clients, ophthalmology, and dentistry. Dr. Wittmer and her husband have two children, Dominic and Gabriella. She spends most of her free time chasing after her busy toddlers! With any spare time, she loves to spend time at her lake cabin, fishing, swimming, reading a book, or taking a putt-putt pontoon ride around the lake. Dr. Wittmer’s furry family includes three cats, two dogs, and one horse.
Nutritional Counseling
After the technician gathers the information regarding your pet, the veterinarian will do a thorough physical exam from head to tail. During this exam, they will listen to the heart and lungs and check their eyes and ears (if possible). They will look inside your pet’s mouth, looking for abnormalities and dental disease. An examination will then be performed of the skin and hair coat, looking for lumps or growths and detecting weight loss or gain. They will discuss with you their treatment and/or a diagnostic plan if a health concern is detected.
Comprehensive Examination
Regular physical examinations are extremely important to maintain the health of your pet. Routine examinations give your veterinarian an opportunity to develop a picture of your pet’s overall health and establish baseline health measures. Examinations are also essential in spotting problems before they become serious health issues, ensuring the best possible outcome for your pet.

Laser Surgery
Laser surgery is an alternative to the scalpel. The laser produces a beam of light that cauterizes as it cuts, reducing the bleeding. This helps the surgeon more easily visualize the surgery site, thus speeding up the procedure time. This is beneficial for your pet because it means less time under anesthesia.
Spaying and Neutering
We are able to perform a wide variety of soft tissue surgeries here at Andover Animal Hospital. Spay and neuter procedures are the most commonly performed soft tissue surgeries. These are important for population control as well as to prevent many unwanted illnesses and cancers. Surgery can help remove foreign material from the stomach, remove stones from the bladder, remove certain types of tumors, or fix other problems causing disease. In addition to treating certain illnesses, surgery can also be useful to diagnose disease or cancer. We perform these surgeries every weekday in our hospital. All patients are monitored closely by qualified technical staff and using top-of-the-line monitoring equipment.

We are proud that we have the most up-to-date equipment to treat dental disease, including digital dental x-rays. This allows us to detect if there is any disease beneath the gum line that we would not be able to see otherwise. We can often see undetected abscesses, broken teeth, resorbed roots, retained roots, and more, thanks to dental radiographs.
