        Opened in 1921, the Bates Hardware and Grocery store stood at the corner of Howell Mill Road and Defoors Ferry. In 1961 Mr. Bates became affiliated with Ace Hardware. In 1973, the Doss family bought the store from the Bates family who had decided to retire from the business.

        We are located at I-75 and Howell Mill Road (approx. 3 miles inside the perimeter). After exiting on Howell Mill, head west. The store will be approximately 1/4 mile from the exit on the corner of Howell Mill & Bellemeade which turns into Defoors Ferry on the other side of Howell Mill.

        Overall

        I love the idea of shopping small(er) businesses when I can. We called to see if their price would be reasonably in line with the big box stores after we researched a grill we wanted. Not only was it an upgrade from that available elsewhere for only minimally more $, but they had free delivery with the grill fully put together. They even thoughtfully delivered more of the potted flowers I bought the day I came in to order it!

        I am a fan of this locally owned hardware store. They have so much more than just hardware and tools which is why can help leaving with more than I intended. Great staff that has been there for many years too.
