Psoriasis may have skin symptoms, but as an immune related disease it is associated with health concerns in a variety of body systems. These health concerns include diabetes, obesity, metabolic syndrome, psoriatic arthritis, cardiovascular disease, and sleep apnea, as well as a variety of autoimmune and psychiatric diseases. It appears that treatment of the psoriasis may actually prevent some of these coexisting conditions. These medical considerations make it especially important for patients who suspect psoriasis to receive a dermatologist’s diagnosis so that their health can be monitored accordingly.
Cryotherapy
Cryotherapy, which is the freezing of genital warts with liquid nitrogen, is the most common treatment used to treat genital wart outbreaks. Performed in-office, the liquid nitrogen freezing causes a blister to form around the wart, allowing the existing dead skin to shed and new skin to form. Depending on the location, size and thickness of the genital warts, multiple treatments may be required for reducing your outbreak.
Medical Weight Loss
Women’s hair loss follows a different pattern than male pattern baldness, and it often has different causes as well. She received her undergraduate degree from The University of Southern California, graduating with honors. Her initial interest in dermatology after school led her to a position at a prominent dermatology practice in Beverly Hills, where she worked for five years. She was accepted into Emory University’s Physician Assistant program and graduated with honors and a master’s degree in medical science (M.M.Sc.) in 1999. Upon graduating, Danna spent seven years working in Internal Medicine and Rheumatology.

After growing up in Albany, Georgia, Dr. Griffin completed his B.S. in chemistry at the University of Georgia, then went on to earn his M.D. from the Medical College of Georgia. Upon completing his internship at the Cleveland Metropolitan General Hospital in pediatrics, Dr. Griffin was commissioned in the U.S. Navy and stationed in Norfolk, Virginia, where he was assigned to a pediatric clinic. He then completed his residency at the Mary Hitchcock Hospital at Dartmouth College.

It is very important to have genital warts removed if you become pregnant while infected. Warts of the vaginal wall can reduce the ability of vaginal tissues to stretch during childbirth, creating difficulty during birth. Though rare, a mother can pass genital warts onto her child during birth. Babies can develop the warts in their throats, causing airway obstruction that would require surgery. Cervical Cancer
Preventatively, vaccines such as Gardisil are available to protect yourself against most strains of HPV that cause both genital warts and cervical cancer. Cervarix is another vaccine that protects against cervical cancer, but not genital warts. While not a guarantee, to decrease the risk of becoming infected: always wear a condom, avoid having unprotected sex with multiple partners, inquire about your partner’s sexual history and schedule regular check-ups, as cervical cancer and cancer of the vulva, anus, and penis have all been closely linked to HPV infection.

Multiple Sclerosis
Although there have been no reports of birth defects with this medicine, women who are pregnant or about to become pregnant may not be treated. It is also our policy not to perform these treatments on nursing mothers. Patients with a history of neuromuscular disease (multiple sclerosis and myasthenia gravis) or other types of diseases involving neurotransmission should avoid these treatments. Additionally, patients currently taking aminoglycoside antibiotics, penicillamine and calcium channel blockers, and certain blood-thinning medications should not undergo these treatments. We will discuss this in more detail during the pre-treatment consultation.

Granuloma annulare is unique because, while the medical community knows that it doesn’t generally cause any health problems, its actual cause is unknown. It does appear to have a genetic link, and research has supported the theory that the condition can have a number of different triggers which vary from one patient to the next. Some of the apparent triggers include animal or insect bites, certain infections, tuberculosis skin tests, and other minor injuries to the skin. It also seems to occur more in patients with type I diabetes and, to a lesser extent, patients with thyroid disease.

Chemotherapy
Topical Chemotherapy usually comes in the form of a cream or lotion that is placed directly on the skin one or two times a day for several weeks. For basal cell carcinomas affecting only the top layer of skin, a prescription drug called imiquimod is recommended. Alternately, a drug called 5-fluorouracil (5-FU) may be used topically or injected.

Mohs Surgery
If skin cancers worsen, then surgery will be necessary to remove them. Treatment of skin cancers utilizing the MOHS surgery technique is one of our areas of expertise. This micrographically controlled surgery is extremely accurate and necessary to ensure complete removal of the cancer, allowing for the best possible aesthetic outcome. DAXXIFY® Anti-Wrinkle Injections are FDA-approved to address wrinkles, frown lines, and other signs of aging in the face. Using natural peptides, DAXXIFY® results are outstanding and similar to those achieved with Botox® or Dysport® injections.
Liposuction
Treatments with natural growth factors have made the most significant progress in the facial area. Growth factor-enhanced fat transfer has been around for a while. This procedure is the surgical combination of injecting components of a patient’s own blood along with their own purified fat to augment areas of lost volume and wrinkles on the face. The process of fat transfer involves board-certified dermatologist Dr. Scott Karempelis performing mild liposuction in our Surgical Suite on another area such as the abdomen or flanks to obtain donor fat. That fat is then transferred to re-plump thinned tissue, providing patients with results similar to the capabilities of manufactured facial filling products such as Juvéderm®, Radiesse®, Sculptra®, Restylane®, and Restylane Lyft®.
Lip Augmentation
Facial fillers: Also referred to as dermal fillers or injectables, facial fillers are injections of solution (usually containing collagen and/or hyaluronic acid) that is administered into specific areas of the face, most commonly for the treatment of wrinkles and lip augmentation.
Body Contouring
EMSculpt® has been shown to be effective in muscle toning and body contouring in two primary areas of the body: the abdomen and the buttocks. It’s FDA approved for enhancing abdominal tone, and strengthening abdominal, thigh, buttock, arm and calf muscles.
Laser Resurfacing
Wrinkles radiating from the corner of the eyes caused by smiling, laughing or squinting (known as “crow’s feet”) can be especially distressing to some individuals. Thankfully, all three of these injectable treatments can be used to reduce the appearance of crow’s feet. They can also work in tandem with laser resurfacing treatments for even more comprehensive results.

Moles
Moles are small black or brown growths that can appear anywhere on the skin. They are very common and usually harmless, but an individual may need or want to have a mole removed for various reasons. Removing a mole is a simple in-office procedure that can be performed in our office. The majority of mole-removal procedures require only one visit.
Cosmetic Surgery
CO2 (carbon dioxide) laser treatments remain in very high demand due to their ability to effectively treat visible signs of aging like wrinkles, as well as sun damage, scarring, moles, and other imperfections. Dermabrasion
Dermabrasion: A former acne scarring technique that uses a fast rotating wire brush to remove the top layer of skin. Now due to many problems with pigment, this technique is not used often.

Corns
Newer warts are more easily spread than older ones. You can re-infect yourself by exposing the wart to uninfected areas of the body, so it is important to avoid doing so to reduce the risk of spreading. Some skin conditions have similar appearance to warts, such as certain types of skin cancer, corns, skin tags, and other non-cancerous growths. Eczema
Eczema is a very common, chronic skin condition that’s distinguished by irritated, inflamed, and itchy patches of skin. Eczema is not life-threatening but can cause itching, which typically induces scratching that can produce infection—making the condition more serious than a regular rash.
Fungus
Nail fungal infections (medically called onychomycosis) occur when a fungus overgrows on, under, or within the nail. While the condition can affect both the fingernails and the toenails, toenails are particularly vulnerable because they often come into contact with the warm, damp environments that allow fungi to grow. Even the inside of your shoe (particularly if your feet tend to sweat) can help fungi grow. While the infection itself is not harmful to most people, it causes the nail to become thick, discolored, brittle, ragged, and irregularly shaped, which can make patients feel embarrassed or can eventually lead to discomfort and irritation.
Lesions
CellFX® is an innovative FDA-approved technology that treats select types of benign skin lesions like warts and sebaceous hyperplasia. The procedure uses an exclusive technology called Nano-Pulse Stimulation™ or NPS™. Ultrafine needles deliver extremely quick nanosecond pulses of electrical energy into the lesion. This works at a cellular level, helping your body to break down the unwanted lesion without affecting the healthy tissue around the abnormal cells. The result is a gradual clearing of your skin lesion and the growth of healthy new skin cells in its place.
Chemical Peels
During your chemical peel appointment, one of our board-certified dermatologists, physician assistants, or other licensed and experienced professionals will begin by applying a customized chemical solution to your skin, based on your unique skin type as well as the specific concerns you want to address (such as fine lines and wrinkles, acne, age spots, scars, etc.). The solution will be given a specified amount of time to penetrate your skin to a precise depth before it is removed. Depending on the depth of peel you have chosen, you will experience a certain degree of visible peeling over the coming days as your skin’s healing process clears away damaged surface skin to reveal smoother, firmer, younger-looking skin beneath.

Equipped with a Bachelor of Science in Microbiology from the University of Georgia and a Masters in Physician Assistant Studies from the University of South Alabama, Mara earned her board certification in 2000. Throughout her many years at DAA, she has provided exceptional care for patients and has treated almost every type of cosmetic and skin care concern imaginable. She’s our resident expert in miraDry® sweat reduction, and she also specializes in wrinkle reduction injections. Additionally, she has been seeing hair loss patients since 2005 and has experience treating a number of other skin conditions.

Psoriasis
Psoriasis is a chronic disease of immune dysregulation that causes a dry, reddish and scaly rash that is characterized by increased speed of cell production. Originating from the Greek word psora, meaning “being itchy,” psoriasis is a common skin condition that affects nearly 7.5 million people in the United States. Normally, skin cells reproduce every 21-28 days. With psoriasis, skin cells reproduce at a much faster rate of two to six days. The accelerated cell production then causes constant shedding of the skin as the older skin cells are replaced with new skin cells. There are various types of psoriasis that can develop from various triggering agents in all parts of the body and require specific treatment based on the severity of the psoriasis. While psoriasis is a non-contagious skin disorder, many people experience social anxiety as the effects of psoriasis are generally noticeable.
