1981: Sheila K. Sachs became the Firm’s second female Member in 1981. The Honorable Nancy Paige preceded Sheila as the first woman member at Gordon Feinblatt in 1979. Sheila pioneered the Family Law Practice at Gordon Feinblatt and was the first woman President at the Bar Association of Baltimore City in 1987. Throughout her career, Sheila has received many prestigious recognitions over the years, including Influential Marylanders twice, the 2015 Woman’s Bar Association of Maryland Rita C. Davidson Award, the 2012 and 2016 Best Lawyers Baltimore Family Law Mediation “Lawyer of the Year” designation, Super Lawyers’ Maryland Top 50 Women designation, the 2011 Bar Association of Baltimore City Living Legends Award, the 2009 Margaret Brent – Juanita Jackson Mitchell Award, and the 2009 Maryland State Bar Association Family Law Section Beverly Groner Award. Sheila’s practice includes litigation and negotiation of marital settlement agreements, addressing the equitable distribution of marital property, alimony, custody, child support and related proceedings, drafting and negotiating pre and post marital agreements as well as family law mediation. Today, Sheila practices with fellow Family Law team members Jerry Thrope, Kirk Kolodner and Carol Cooper.

We represent clients in numerous types of personal injury matters ranging from simple auto accidents to catastrophic injuries and wrongful death claims. Members of our Team are fluent in Korean, Spanish, Chinese and Russian.
Fraud
We represent financial service providers in a wide range of litigation. Members of our Team defend single and multiparty complex claims, including consumer class action suits, before federal and state courts, as well as federal and state agency proceedings and alternative dispute proceedings. These disputes range in subject matter from UCC disputes, to lender liability claims, to regulatory compliance violations (TILA, ECOA, FCRA, FDCPA, UDAAP, etc.), to Maryland credit law claims, and more. We have been asked to serve as special counsel and as expert witnesses in complex cases concerning insurance fraud and in cases where compliance is at issue. Financial services providers rely on our Financial Services Team for representation in all stages of administrative proceedings before Maryland's Commissioner of Financial Regulation and its Insurance Commissioner. We also have a long-established practice in representation of many banking institutions and corporations on bankruptcy and reorganization matters, workouts and participation arrangements.
Murder
On December 13, 2019, Gordon Feinblatt sponsored the students from ¡Adelante Latina! for a cookie reception before they headed to the Everyman Theatre to see the performance of Murder on the Orient Express. ¡Adelante Latina! is a free, after-school academic enrichment and college preparatory program for promising Latina girls attending Baltimore City high schools.

Gordon Feinblatt has a broad and diversified Securities Practice. The Firm represents publicly traded companies, advising them on general corporate governance matters, Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) and stock exchange regulatory compliance, private placements, registered securities offerings and periodic reporting, proxy solicitations and other reports under the Securities Exchange Act of 1934. We counsel public companies on financial reporting, executive compensation, corporate governance and other disclosure matters and provide advice in connection with insider transactions (including Section 16 and Section 10(b) of the Exchange Act). We also assist our clients with changes in reporting and corporate governance pursuant to the Sarbanes-Oxley Act, the Dodd-Frank Wall Street Reform and Consumer Protection Act and the JOBS Act; prepare no-action letter and interpretive requests; prepare confidential treatment requests and provide a variety of legal opinions under the federal and state securities laws.

Our lawyers have extensive experience representing both buyers and sellers in a range of Mergers & Acquisitions (M&A) transactions, including both asset and stock acquisitions and sales, recapitalizations, reorganizations, spin-offs, mergers, consolidations, and more unique structures.

Non-compete Agreement
Health care professionals look to Gordon Feinblatt for advice regarding business organization and contracting, including non-compete agreements, practice management and administration, employment and employee benefit issues, real estate acquisition, changes of ownership, tax structuring, and financing strategies. Physicians look to us for individualized guidance and legal counsel regarding practice succession and trusts and estates planning.
Severance Agreement
The TCA requires the Secretary of Labor to set an initial contribution rate that will apply to all “wages” up to and including the Social Security wage base. A definition added by the 2023 amendments specifies that “wages” include hourly wages or salary, commissions, compensatory pay, severance pay, holiday/vacation pay, any other type of employer-paid leave, and tips or gratuities.

1985: Neil Schechter joined the Firm as an Associate in 1985. Throughout his career, Neil joined and rejoined the Firm several times, rejoining in 1988, 2009 and 2017. Neil focuses his practice on providing counsel on all types of complex commercial and residential real estate matters, including acquisition and sale of real estate, residential community development, planned community development, development of mixed use projects, and land development. Today as a Member of the Firm, Neil also serves as General Counsel to Klein Enterprises.

Virtually, every commercial real estate transaction must deal with potential environmental liabilities in the face of rapidly changing environmental standards. In fact, many transactions cannot proceed without creative solutions to seemingly intractable environmental problems. We assist clients to overcome environmental hurdles encountered during the acquisition or development of real estate, the acquisition of companies, and the financing of commercial loans. We also advise on compliance with climate change regulations for building owners.

On January 21, 2022, the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC) adopted a new rule concerning how deposit insurance would be provided to accounts maintained by trusts. The new rule becomes effective on April 1, 2024. Under existing law, trust accounts are insured differently based on the type of trust and the number of distinct beneficiaries. Trust accounts are currently insured based on one of three trust types: informal revocable trusts (POD accounts), formal revocable trusts, or irrevocable trusts. Separate FDIC insurance coverage is provided to revocable trust accounts with distinct beneficiaries and irrevocable trust accounts with non-contingent beneficiaries. The current FDIC insurance rules for trusts are complicated and the FDIC enacted the new rule in an effort to simplify deposit insurance coverage determinations for trust accounts.
