Provided by DexKnowsWe brought Shelby out to speak to us about doing finish work on an interior job. While here he also told us our wood exterior was in dire need of painting. He pitched us on his company's expertise & the paint they use on the exterior & the guarantees. We decided to go ahead & do the exterior with the understanding that they would do the inside too. They seemed to have a cohesive crew & were polite and knowledgeable. However, their crew had turnover during the job with several members quitting during the course of the job. That brought the # of people working on our job down to a small crew & a snails pace. Plus-Shelby would pull them off our job to take them to a job painting at a school somewhere so our job was not always his priority & it was frustrating because we were also contending with the rain component & I really wanted the job complete because they had all their ladders, tarps, painting gear all over my front porch & in my garage for weeks & weeks while this job went on & on.
In addition-the crews foreman was a young man named Gary Beverly who was supposedly an Army veteran. I was told he had recently experienced a house fire and lost everything. I had some furniture that was going to consignment & he expressed interest in it. Long story short-when I gave him prices-he balked but I felt bad for him so I ultimately gave him furniture. 2 Thomasville wing chairs & a side table. Now my husband & I were sitting on those 2 chairs while we waited for our new couch to arrive but Gary would ask almost daily when the chairs would be available. The crew did a terrible job on our garage door & it bubbled. Then one of their staff, Eugene (who coincidentally I came to find out had a consignment store on Hilton Head) sanded the bubbles off and re-painted these spots and so they showed up shiny and looked like they were peeling. Plus they forgot to paint the entrance door to the garage 100% & the trash enclosure. So the deal with Gary was supposed to be that he would return and paint/re-paint these areas in exchange for the free furniture. I never heard from him again even though I texted & phoned numerous times. I got snookered by this young man under Shelby's hire.
And lastly, there was a juncture where I spoke frankly with Shelby about the time management of the job and my desire to get it done. I made a point to be here at the house whenever the painters were although he assured me that I didn't need to be. There was 1 day when Gary was working alone (a bad staffing day) & he fell off his ladder & into a pole/birdhouse we had on the side of our home. He came to us & was shaken up & it was clear that his side & ribs had sustained a blow. We gave him ice & he left our job for the day. Fortunately, we were here and he didn't need us to help him up off the ground. But Shelby told me during this conversation that "I was making it harder than it had to be". I was offended by his remark, although I did not tell him so. 1st, I presumed we'd be working on the inside of my home together in the future & I didn't want to rock the boat. 2nd, I knew he was as frustrated with the schedule going long too & I gave him the benefit of the doubt that maybe he was letting off steam. But I don't think he should have spoken to me in such a condescending manner. I paid his fees as agreed upon and if he was behind on this job it was his responsibility. It was the weather, time management & job management.
And finally-Shelby never came back to do the inside work on our home which is why we contacted him in the 1st place. I feel like we got a bait & switch. He got the big ticket item of painting the outside for roughly $20,000.00 & he will not return my calls, emails or texts to do the inside. I couldn't be more disappointed & feel l...
