In these instances, our veterinarians will recommend referral to one of the specialist in our area. Internal Medicine, Surgery, Oncology, Dermatology, Ophthalmology and Dentistry specialists are available in Houston and in College Station. While we continue as your primary care veterinarian, referral allows us to provide the specialized care that your pet may need.
Nutritional Counseling
Tina joined the Chestnut family in 1994. She arrived a fresh-faced 18 year old and began her career here as a kennel attendant. In the years following, she worked every position in the clinic garnering every bit of information she came by and became the office manager in 1999. She is responsible for keeping the clinic organized and running smoothly on a daily basis, implementing staff training and continuing education, introducing and maintaining our social media footprint, as well as numerous other duties which keep our staff on their toes. Tina enjoys interacting with clients and their four-legged family members, developing weight loss plans for patients, and most importantly ensuring that each and every client and patient have their needs met by our staff on every occasion. In 2017, she assumed the roll of Practice Manager and has since broadened her duties even more. Tina enjoys reading, traveling, and spending time outdoors. She has been married to Ken for 10+ years and has an all cat house currently. Chiddie Kitty, Fawker and Gertrude are her fur babies and the staff just loves when they spend time at the clinic.

Pain Management
At Chestnut Animal Hospital, we perform a wide array of surgical procedures with an emphasis on pain control and safety during anesthesia. Prior to any anesthetic procedure, we will draw a blood sample from your pet to perform a pre-op blood screen. This sample will be sent to an outside laboratory to make sure that there are no underlying metabolic issues which may make anesthesia a risk. This coupled with a full physical screening, prior to surgical procedures, is done to ensure that your pet is a good candidate for anesthesia. When we perform a surgical procedure, there is always a veterinarian and at least one technician trained in anesthetic monitoring present. While the veterinarian is performing the procedure, the technician is monitoring your pet's vitals and an electronic monitor. Blood pressure, heart rate, blood oxygenation, temperature and breathing rate are monitored closely throughout your pet's surgical procedure. For all general anesthetic procedures, patients receive intravenous catheters in order to provide fluid therapy during surgery to keep the patient well hydrated an allow for adequate perfusion to all vital organs. Patients are also placed on special heating devices to maintain their body temperature, because hypothermia during anesthesia can be a side effect and slow a patients recovery. Pain management is started prior to any surgical procedure and is continued throughout. Most of our surgical patients will also be sent home with oral pain control to ensure your pet is as pain-free and comfortable as possible.

Dental Care Oral disease is the most frequently diagnosed infectious disease in pets. By the time that most dogs and cats reach the age of 4 years old, a reported 85% show signs of oral disease. There are four stages of dental disease, found in animals, that can range form redness along the gumline to deep pockets of infection and severe bone loss. Good dental care for your pet will help to prevent gingivitis, periodontal disease, pain, tooth loss and potential damage to internal organs stemming from chronic oral infections.

Wound and Fracture Care

Dental Surgery
Prior to any anesthetic procedure, we will draw a blood sample from your pet. This sample will then be sent to an outside laboratory for analysis. This along with a full physical screening, prior to any surgical procedure, is done to ensure that your pet is a good candidate for anesthesia. All dental patients, once under anesthesia, will have a dental exam and full mouth digital dental x-rays. Evaluation of the dental x-rays and of each tooth will be performed to look for any evidence of bone loss, root exposure fractures, periodontal disease and mobility. A professional ultrasonic scaling, to clean and move tartar and plaque, will be performed on the teeth and under the gum line. All cleanings are followed by a high-speed polishing to return the enamel to a smooth surface less conducive to plaque accumulation. A fluoride treatment is then applied to all the teeth. If your pet is in need of oral surgery, pain medication will de used during and sent home after your pets procedure. Our veterinarians perform local dental blocks, as well as injectable pain medication, to ensure your pet's comfort following surgery.

Senior Pet Care
Senior Wellness Care At Chestnut Animal Hospital, we strive to make your pet's senior years as happy and healthy as possible. Our belief is that the best way to do this is to establish a senior care program, tailored to you pet's needs. This allows us to diagnose and treat age-related health issues early on. In cats at the age of 8 years old, we recommend diagnostic testing to get a baseline of your cat's organ function, the health of his or her red and white blood cells and thyroid function. In our canine patients senior care starts between the ages of 6 to 8 years old, determined by such things as breed and size. Moving forward with the combination of yearly or more frequent, depending on your pet's needs, comprehensive physical exams and complete blood panels along with urinalyses allow us to get a true picture of your cat or dogs overall health. The aim of our senior care program is to maintain the quality of you pet's life and to slow the progression of any age-related diseases that may arise. Because most of the chronic diseases we see in senior pets are slow to progress, early recognition is usually only possible through diagnostic tests. The earlier that we diagnose a disease, the more the likelihood that we can slow or reverse its process and maintain a longer period of high quality life for your senior pet.
