Macular Degeneration
Macular degeneration is a disease which affects a small area of the retina known as the macula. The macula is a specialized spot on the retina that allows us to see the fine detail of whatever is directly in front of us. Macular degeneration occurs when the macula begins to deteriorate.
Laser Eye Surgery
What does LASIK mean? It is an acronym for laser in situ keratomileusis, which means to reshape the cornea without disturbing the adjoining tissue. Translation of these Greek words: in situ means “in the natural or normal place,” kerato means “cornea,” and mileusis means “to shape.”

Cataract Surgery
Cataract surgery can be a wonderful way to restore lost vision due to the development of cataracts. Cataracts are changes in the ocular lens of the eye, causing vision to be diminished. Some signs and symptoms of cataracts may be constant foggy vision, being unable to read small letters even with appropriate reading glasses, and increased light sensitivity with increased difficulty driving at night due to glare. Cataracts are mostly an age-related condition and the older an individual, the higher the likely hood that cataracts are beginning to develop.
Eye Exam
When your baby is about six months, you should take him to your doctor of optometry for his first thorough eye examination. Things that the optometrist will test for include excessive or unequal amounts of nearsightedness, farsightedness, astigmatism, lack of eye movement ability, as well as other eye health problems. These problems are not common, but it is important to identify children who have them at this stage. Vision development and eye health problems can be more easily corrected if treatment is begun early.

Janelle graduated from NICC with her Associates Degree in Nursing in 2015, and has 10 years and counting of experience working in the medical field. She joined the VHC team in 2019, and has worked hard to follow continuing education courses on dry eye, diabetic retinopathy and other medical diagnoses to keep up with the latest symptoms and treatment plans. She assists with pretesting and setting up referrals for surgery. Janelle loves interacting with the patients, and strives to make their time with us enjoyable. In her free time, she loves going to concerts, reading, and spending time with family and friends.

MRI
The importance of the Cirrus HD-OCT when examining the retina can be compared to diagnose a broken arm without an x-ray or a ruptured disc without an MRI. The cross-sectional retinal imaging offers individual layers of the retina, which enables the optometrist to see and measure delicate structures and monitor any changes. This enables detection of several retinal disorders such as Macular Degeneration and Glaucoma.
