Amy Nau is a partner at Korb & Associates, PLLC, and an adjunct associate clinical professor at the New England College of Optometry, a longtime Fellow of the American Academy of Optometry, and member of the section on Cornea Contact Lens and Refractive Technolgies. She is a member of the American Optometric Association, the Massachusetts Society of Optometrists, the International Keratoconus Academy, the Scleral Lens Education Society, the Association for Vision and Research in Ophthalmology and the Eye and Contact Lens Association. Dr. Nau’s research interests focus on medical contact lenses and ocular surface disease. She enjoys mentoring graduate students and young optometrists, cooking, cycling, learning French and being with her family.
Macular Degeneration
The shift towards younger-onset is linked to faster progression and may lead to the increasing severity of myopia. Higher levels of myopia have a greater risk of serious medical complications over time, including increased risk for glaucoma, retinal detachment, earlier onset of cataracts, and myopic macular degeneration. Early intervention can reduce the progression of nearsightedness.

Cataract Surgery
If you’ve been diagnosed with cataracts, you may wonder if cataract surgery is right around the corner. Not to worry. There are many preventive steps you can take to slow the progression of cataracts and preserve your vision. That doesn’t mean you won’t eventually need surgery, but you can at least delay the need for quite a while.

Due to the increased risk in diabetic patients, doctors recommend that people over 30 with diabetes get an annual dilated eye exam. Diabetic retinopathy is a condition that is caused by damage to the retina. Patients that have diabetes may also have experienced extended periods of time where their blood sugar was elevated. The high levels of blood sugar damage the retina’s walls which leave them susceptible to leaking. When fluid accumulates in the retina or macula, it causes vision loss.

Ensure you arrive at the office without wearing any makeup or moisturizers on your face. We screen for recent use of any photosensitive medications, Botox, or other dermal fillers. They may interfere with treatment.
Eyelid Surgery
The tears are the eye's defender. The structure and function of each component that contributes to the tear film must be evaluated. In addition, a careful medical history is critical for systemic problems such as autoimmune disorders or cancer treatments that can have sometimes serious consequences for the surface of the eye. Some ocular surgeries also predispose to dry eye issues. Allergies, exposure to chemical irritants, and use of contact lenses can provide clues to symptoms. Eyelid surgery or the use of Botox can sometimes lead to the development of ocular surface disease. In some cases, such as trauma or thyroid eye disease, the eyelids fail to protect the ocular surface. Other common problems include blepharitis and mites in the eyelashes.
