1 star is too much, there should be a no star option for places like this.
I went here on a Saturday because I was sick, and being new to the area did not have an established doctor. After checking in, I waited in the lobby for 45 minutes. After finally being called back, I was ushered into a room where I was left alone for 55 minutes with the door closed without being checked on. I threw up once in that time, and really needed some water but didn't complain when they at last came in to provide medical care. Before the doctor even heard all of my symptoms, she prescribed me antibiotics and steroids telling me that would take care of about anything. I mentioned twice during our conversation I was taking Goody's for pain relief while I was sick.
The doctor didn't warn me about mixing NSAIDs and Steroids, and I spent a consequential 24 hours in writhing pain from the bad drug interaction. When I called them on Monday morning for advice on if I should go to the ER as I may be bleeding internally, they told me to get up there and they would help me out. Once I arrived, I was greeted with indifference and after waiting 25 minutes in the lobby, I left because I couldn't believe that when I had come in for a drug interaction caused by their doctor's oversight, they weren't seeing me right away. Before leaving I told them I thought it was ridiculous that I wasn't being seen right away when I was potentially bleeding internally from their doctor's oversight, and the receptionist and nurses in the room only said if I'd sit down I'd be seen next. (I was the only person there, I might add)
Having a dad with chronic illness my entire life has put me in a lot of medical facilities in my life. I have never seen such a poor excuse for a medical office, so careless, so indifferent. Go anywhere before you go here, I ended up far worse off than I would have been otherwise.

My family and I have been patients of Dr Withrow for ~30 years. he's a very caring professional doctor who carefully assesses his patients. Some of the people on this board sound like they believe they have more medical knowledge and experience than a highly trained physician, and get upset when they don't get what they think they need, instead getting what they actually medically need (which may simply be aspirin and bed rest :0). Others report problems with paying their bills, and don't seem to understand procedures presented clearly in writing by the office. We would (and do) highly recommend Dr Withrow.

Gave 1 star - its the minimum available. Had the unfortunate experience of a few visits here. The office was regularly making mistakes with calling in my prescription - and thats when they bothered to get around to calling the pharmacy, and eventually, the correct pharmacy. Run for your life, as there are other family doctors in town.

Do not believe the old 4/5 stars reviews. They are all fake. They were made by their own employees. Please go to the following link to see their real face.

The staff working in the front desk is rude;
The will do their best to take money out of your pocket. They will ask you to do test, if you say 'what is this for?' they will say 'it is required by the physician' or 'it is required by the state'.
When you check out, they will force you to pay at each visit before filing the bill to insurance. Even though the insurance does the adjustment, they will not refund you the money.
The front desk stuff is very rude. They enjoy chatting. If you interrupt her, she will charge you more. Then tell you. 'I do not care how other places run, this is our policy'!

I've been a patient of The Family Doctor practice for decades and I probably wouldn't be alive except for them.
I've always had good experiences there. I know some people like to complain because they are sometimes treated by PA's instead of the doctor, but Dr. Withrow started out as a PA and he only hires the very best. One of them was a medic in Vietnam and I know he also hired a PA that was first in her class at Duke University.
I heard recently that The NC Family Doctor practice achieved the highest Level 3 Patient Centered Medical Home certification from the National Commission of Quality Assurance. So, good luck finding a better family medical practice anywhere else.
When patients call in wanting to have anti-biotics prescribed over the phone, they sometimes get upset if the practice won't prescibe it without seeing them (and then it turns out to be a virus....) However, appeasement is not what ethical medical practice is about.

Avoid this place. I've been here once and will never come back again. The front staff is very rude and their medical team is uncoordinated. There are so many clinics in chapel hill, so pass on this one and go to one where you can get better service for your money.

Take two aperin and call me in the morning. Thats what I was told to do. I was very ill with flu like symptoms and had blisters on my scalp, and it was all of a sudden. I couldnt get in to see my regular doctor and this office was close by and I was able to go as a walk-in. Unfortumately it was a waste of my time. They said they couldnt find anything wrong with me. I was very weak, very lethargic. I felt like I was dying. That night I ended up going to the emergency room and was admitted for over a week with round the clock antibiotics. I had a skin disease called cellulitis, and it was so bad that I really was dying. It was a good thing I went to the ER!
The thing that gets me is, he really didnt take the time to find out what, if anythnig was wrong., he didnt really listen to what I was saying, I probably was there 30 min tops. He didnt even say "its just a cold or its the flu" because thats what my symtoms were. He just said"take two asperin and call if there arent any changes.

How many doctor's do you know that have taken medical supplies and trips to middle American countries while the deaths squads were rampaging because he wanted to help the poor?. This is a physician who decided he wanted to be a doctor while serving in The Peace Corp. There is a clinic in Grifton that began during Hurricane Fran when all the attention was going to the bigger cities that were also being flooded. There was an NPR story about what Dr. Withrow and his wife did for that community. The point I'm making is this guy really cares.
No he won't prescribe you drugs to help support your habit or let you slide on annual physicals when you have issues that need monitoring. And yes, if you don't have an appointment, you might have to wait a while to be seen, but at least they do allow walk-ins and the staff is professional and polite. The best time to get there is right when they open. The worst time is probably during lunch. However, there are so many pretty girls in that office who cares?.

The staff and physicians of the family doctor make you feel welcome and appreciated. He staff is knowledgable and has the resources to make informed decisions. Like all medical practices they are reliant on your truthfulness and ability to share. Be sure to be honest in your communications and they will help you to the best of their abilities.flexible hours and the ability to do continuing family practice as well as a walk-in care facility help to make this more than just a doc-in-a-box.

I have been a patient of The Family Doctor for many years and have always been pleased with the staff and the services I've received. I had an accident with my bike over the weekend and went to their urgent care clinic. They did x-rays which showed a fracture and since they don't do any casting there, I was placed in a splint and sling and they made arrangements for me to be seen immediately at Triangle Orthopaedics. I'd probably still be waiting if I had gone to the ER. Thanks for the quick diagnosis, and for getting me into a specialist the same day!
