Preventive Care

Dental Care
Cats are known to be fastidious and clean critters but sometimes they need a little extra help and that’s where you come in! Daily toothbrushing can greatly improve your cat’s oral health and even increase the time between professional dental cleanings.
Vaccination
Preventative care is the best way to keep your cat healthy, and vaccinations are some of the most effective methods of preventative care.
Veterinary Ophthalmology
Dr. Spector graduated from Cornell College of Veterinary Medicine in 2013 and has lived in Vermont since 2017. She worked in equine practice for seven years before transitioning to small animal practice. In spring 2023 she joined the team at Affectionately Cats. Dr. Spector enjoys feline general practice and has special interests in internal medicine, ophthalmology, and dentistry. She lives on a small vegetable farm with her husband, their daughter, and their two wonderful Siamese mix cats, Myron and Lester. In her free time, Dr. Spector enjoys a variety of outdoor activities, reading, and taking care of her elderly pony, Nutmeg.
Nutritional Counseling
All injectable vaccines carry some risk of side effects such as lethargy, loss of appetite, and soreness at the injection site; usually, these side effects are mild and temporary (no more than 24 hours). More serious side effects such as fibrosarcoma are rare; only 1-2 cases of this kind of malignant tumor are reported developing for every 10,000 vaccinated cats (AAFP Advisory Panel 1430). Still, we take the risk seriously and are committed to using only the safest vaccines available and offering alternatives to injectable vaccines whenever possible.

Illness Treatment

Parasites Treatment and Control
If there is evidence of fleas on your cat at the time of admission for surgery, a topical anti-flea medication will be applied. It is important to continue flea control measures for all pets in the home for at least 3 months to prevent re-infestation with fleas. Additional doses of flea control medication will be available for purchase.
Pain Management
Anesthesia and pain control injection during the surgery, providing a full 24 hours of relief. Additional pain relief tablets available and recommended.

Infection Treatment

Parvovirus Infection Treatment
This vaccine covers three different, highly contagious diseases common in kittens. Rhinotracheitis (caused by feline herpes) and Calicivirus are airborne pathogens that cause upper respiratory symptoms such as sneezing, nasal discharge, and watery eyes. Feline Panleukopenia is caused by a strain of parvovirus and can lead to high fever, vomiting, diarrhea, and death particularly in kittens younger than 5 months old. We use an intranasal (nasal drop) vaccine. About 20% of cats will have some sneezing 4-7 days after vaccination. This form of the vaccine is safer and more effective than the injectable form. We give the vaccine to kittens every 3-4 weeks until they are over 16 weeks of age, then every 3 years thereafter. We have seen the disease develop in cats that are not vaccinated after a three year gap.
Feline Retro Virus Treatment
Feline leukemia virus is typically spread through repeated or prolonged contact with an infected cat’s bodily fluids—often through bites, nursing, mutual grooming, or sharing water or food dishes; its primary effect is to suppress the cat’s immune system, making that cat more susceptible to other kinds of infection and disease. Most cats build up some immunity to this virus as they age, but kittens are very susceptible both in the womb and while nursing, and once the virus has established itself, it cannot be cured. For that reason, we recommend all kittens be tested for and vaccinated against feline leukemia. The initial series is two vaccinations 3-4 weeks apart, then boostered yearly based on your cat’s risk level. If the cat is established as an indoor only cat at one year of age, we do not recommend a continuation of this vaccine.

Periodontal Disease Treatment
During every physical exam, our doctors check your cat’s teeth for tartar, gingivitis, periodontal disease, and any obvious signs of resorptive lesions (teeth that the body has begun to break down and reabsorb), and they will recommend a dental cleaning if they see plaque or gingivitis. Periodic dentals are an important part of overall wellness care: tartar and gingivitis allow disease-causing bacteria from the mouth into the rest of your cat’s body, and resorptive lesions are painful teeth that need to be removed.

Dental Surgery
If oral surgery is needed, we will send home pain medication to keep your cat comfortable while healing. Any infection will be treated with antibiotics. We will discuss at-home care with you at the discharge appointment.
Veterinary Surgery
Modern anesthesia is very safe: less than 1% of cats die under anesthesia. Procedures such as spays, neuters, dental cleanings, and other routine surgeries pose very little risk to your cat. Additionally, we use the safest and most advanced anesthetic protocols available to further reduce the risks associated with anesthesia.
Spaying and Neutering
We strive to reduce the number of unwanted animals in our region. Spaying females and neutering males is currently the most humane and effective means known to achieve this goal of controlling animal overpopulation. By working with local humane societies, rescue groups, and individuals, we hope to be able to reach out to and serve a large population of animals in our region not currently receiving this care. It is the desire of Affectionately Cats that all have access to these essential services of spaying and neutering, and we are proud to host VSN in this effort.

Lab and X-Rays

Laboratory Services
Your cat will be admitted first thing the morning of the procedure. One of our doctors will give your cat an examination and perform pre-anesthetic blood tests. We will keep your cat under close observation during recovery and call you when the procedure is finished to schedule a discharge appointment (usually around 4-5 pm).

Microchipping
Microchipping allows you to locate your cat if he/she is ever lost and brought to a humane society where they can read the tiny chip that was inserted under your cats skin. The chip has your contact information.
