This might include the treatment of glaucoma, eye infections, allergic eye conditions and others, to name just a few.
Macular Degeneration
Reflected sunlight (from the water, for example) is particularly dangerous. There is also evidence that exposure to UV light can contribute to the development of eye diseases that commonly occur as we age, such as cataract and macular degeneration.
Laser Eye Surgery
Optometrists do not perform LASIK as it is considered an invasive, surgical procedure. However, the pre- and post-operative phases are well within the scope of optometry. Dr. Monroe has been co-managing laser surgeries (LASIK, LASEK, Epi-LASIK, and PRK) with area physicians since 1992. There is no aspect of any procedure with which he is not familiar. Our patients love not having to go out of town for every post-op check-up. A report of every visit will be forwarded to your original surgeon for continuity of care.
Cataracts
Cataracts: The natural lens in the eye gradually becomes less clear as we get older. When opacities develop in the lens and the lens gets too hazy, vision will be impaired. Our office can diagnose and manage cataract care. When the cataract affects the vision to the extent that you cannot read or see distant objects comfortably, we will recommend cataract surgery. Our office co-manages with cataract specialists that are proven experts in cataract surgery. Cataract surgery can provide you with a bright new world of vision.

By having a consultation and eye examination at our office, our doctor will be able to determine if you are a good candidate for laser vision correction. Patients who are at least 18 years of age, have healthy eyes that are free from retinal problems, corneal scars, and any eye diseases are generally suitable.

Skin Cancer

The same rays that age and damage your skin can and will hurt your eyes as well. Strong sunlight, and artificial light from sources like welding arcs or tanning lamps can burn the surface of the eye, much like sunburn on the skin.
