Divorce
Child Custody and Visitation
Divorces can only be granted by a state district court. A divorce ends a marriage and determines property distribution, as well as child custody, visitation and support.
Adoption
Paternity
Paternity cases can be brought by either parent of the minor child. If it is necessary, the court will order paternity to be determined by blood tests. Once paternity of a child is determined, the court will order child custody, visitation and support.
Guardianship
Susan is licensed to practice law in Wyoming and has been in private practice since 1995. During her career, Susan directed our State's senior law program; served on the Ethics Committee of Cheyenne Regional Medical Center; served on the Board of Directors of Wyoming Legal Services, Inc. and served on the Board of Directors of Wyoming Guardianship Corporation. She also taught in the Legal Assistance Program at Laramie County Community College for several years. Susan has a bachelor's degree in psychology from Brooklyn College of the City University of New York, a master's degree in anthropology from the University of Wyoming and a doctor of jurisprudence degree from the University of Wyoming College of Law.

Medicaid Planning
Medicaid Planning and Recovery. Medicaid is government funded program for persons in need of medical care, provided those persons qualify for such benefits. The goal of Medicaid planning is to protect some of an applicant’s assets, while qualifying the applicant for Medicaid sooner rather than later. Medicaid recovery involves making sure that Medicaid receives only what it is entitled to in reimbursement from the estate of a now deceased Medicaid recipient.

Trusts and Estates

Estate Planning
Estate administration is a general term for making sure that the property of a decedent is distributed to the person who should receive that property. Not all property needs to be administered. Jointly owned property (such as a joint bank account) automatically becomes the property of the surviving owner(s) of that account. Bank accounts with a payable on death (p.o.d.) designation will be paid out to the person(s) so designated. Investment accounts with a transfer on death (t.o.d.) designation will be paid out to the person(s) so designated.
Wills
It is the size of a Wyoming estate which determines whether an estate can be handled as a small estate or must be probated in the local state district court. It does not matter whether the decedent had a last will at the time of his or her death or if he or she died intestate (that is, without a last will).
Trusts
Special Needs Trusts are irrevocable trusts established for the benefit of one, and only one, person with disabilities. That one person with disabilities is referred to as the “life beneficiary.” Such trusts can be established by the person with disabilities; his or her parent, grandparent, guardian or conservator; or a court.
Power of Attorney
Powers of Attorney allow you to appoint a person to manage your finances and other property, if you cannot do so yourself. The person you appoint is known as your “agent.” You can also name a successor (or back-up) agent, in case your agent is unable or unavailable to serve. Your power of attorney can go into effect immediately or at some later, specified, time. Your power of attorney remains valid until you revoke it or die. When you die, your power of attorney “dies” with you. Your agent will not be able to handle any part of your estate once you have passed away.
