A 1997 study conducted by Blunt, Rajwani, and Guerriero concluded that chiropractic treatment of fibromyalgia resulted in the significant improvement in flexibility and a decrease in pain. The authors did, however, note that a multidisciplinary regime including chiropractic care for the treatment of fibromyalgia was recommended.
Plantar Fasciitis
All the nerves in your body originate from the CNS, and extend outwards all the way to the tips of your fingers and toes. So, an irritated L4-L5 nerve can cause referred pain to travel along the course of the sciatic nerve: from the lower back, down through the hip, the leg, and all the way to the foot. Commonly referred to as “sciatica”, this condition is a type of referred pain syndrome, which originates at the level of the spinal joint complex. This type of referred pain can mimic or contribute to symptoms of lumbar disc bulge/herniation (“slipped disc”), tiliotibal band (ITB) syndrome, or plantar fasciitis. Similarly, cervical spine joint restrictions can cause referred pain extending from the neck and travelling down through the shoulder, arm, forearm, wrist and hand. This type of referred pain can mimic or contribute to symptoms of cervical disc bulge/herniation (“slipped disc”),carpal tunnel syndrome, tennis elbow, or rotator cuff syndrome.
Cryotherapy
Ice therapy or cryotherapy is often thought of as the therapy of choice for acute injuries. If you are having pain as the result of an identifiable injury (from a fall, or a blow, or a sprain, strain, sports injury, car accident, etc.) then it is usually best to use an ice pack for the first 24-48 hours. Apply the ice pack for 10-20 minutes (not longer), and repeat at least three times per day, or up to once every hour if pain is severe. Also, it is important that you do not apply the ice directly to the skin. Instead, wrap the ice pack (or bag of frozen peas) in a paper towel or thin damp cloth prior to applying to the injured area. The ice will reduce pain, muscle spasm, inflammation and decrease tissue damage.

Also, functional MRI’s have measured changes in the activity of key centers of the brain, where pain is interpreted, when certain acupuncture points are treated. Furthermore, acupuncture has been observed clinically in our Chicago office to enhance healing, and provide long-lasting pain relief.

Many people have compared the way homeopathy works to that of allergy shots and vaccinations. This can be a useful analogy, since all three treatments involve utilizing a diluted substance that triggers a therapeutic reaction from the body itself. None of these treatments offer an immediate chemical suppression of symptoms in the way that most conventional drugs do. Neither the homeopathic remedy, allergy shot, or vaccination instantly cure the patient (although in many acute conditions, a homeopathic remedy can trigger a healing reaction that may bring about significant symptom reduction within hours or minutes). Instead, all 3 of these treatments rely on a period of time in which the body needs to react, thereby leading to future improvement. Allergy shots trigger various immune system responses which ultimately can lead to a decreased allergic response to various allergens (dust, pollen, animal dander, etc.) Vaccinations trigger the body to manufacture its own antibodies which can ultimately help the body to fight off future infection. Because a homeopathic remedy is prescribed holistically, and based upon ALL of the unique symptoms of the individual (including mental & emotional factors, body temperature, food cravings, and physical symptoms of the entire body) it triggers a more GLOBAL healing reaction. So, instead of just triggering an immune system response (as in allergy shots and vaccinations), the homeopathic remedy triggers a deeper, wide-reaching comprehensive healing reaction, that allows the patient to fully regain their health, on all levels (mental, emotional, physical, etc.) The other advantage of the homeopathic remedy is that it is much more diluted than allergy shots or vaccinations and contains no harmful toxins, so that it is free of side-effects, chemical toxicity, or adverse interactions with other drugs or food supplements.

In 1992, the Annals of Internal Medicine published a review of literature conducted by medical doctors and chiropractic physicians at RAND and UCLA Schools of Medicine. This review of over 25 controlled studies and 9 meta-analysies addressed chiropractic treatment of low-back pain. The conclusion made was that “spinal manipulation hastens recovery form uncomplicated low-back pain.”

Carpal Tunnel Syndrome
Chiropractic treatment for carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) was compared to nonsurgical medical treatment in a study preformed by Davis in 1998. Ultrasound
This treatment should not be confused with diagnostic ultrasound, often used in prenatal screening, but is instead a therapeutic procedure that utilizes sound waves to treat injured muscles, joints, and soft tissues. The sound waves vibrate the tissues back and forth at the cellular level, creating a deep, micro-massage effect, which helps to increase local circulation. In the case of a recent injury, this helps to decrease scar tissue, and adhesion formation, which would otherwise interfere with the body’s healing process. The sound waves also decrease inflammation by destroying unwanted inflammatory cells. Therapeutic ultrasound also accelerates healing by stimulating the activity of the cells responsible for cellular and tissue repair. In chronic cases, special settings are used to create a deep-heating effect, heating the tissues far below the skin’s surface. This heat, along with the vibrations that are caused by the ultrasound, help to “melt away” the muscle spasms, trigger points, and “knots” felt in our muscles.
MRI
During the consultation, you will discuss all aspects of your health issue(s) with the doctor. You will not be rushed and will have all the time you need to explain everything in detail, as well as the opportunity to have all of your questions answered. After the consultation, the doctor will perform a thorough examination which will include various neurologic, orthopedic, and functional testing, custom-tailored to your specific issues. Some of your evaluation may include: an analysis of your posture and gait (how you walk), muscle testing, joint mobility tests, assessment of your workplace ergonomics, and your form during sports and workout & exercise routine. Other diagnostic tests may be ordered if considered necessary, such as: MRI’s, X-rays, or blood work. Once all of this information is analyzed, the doctor will provide you with your diagnosis and will discuss with you the various treatment options that will shape your individualized treatment plan. You will then be advised of your prognosis, including the anticipated frequency, duration, and cost of treatment.

Computed Tomography
An experimental study has shown than in non-degenerated, but bulging discs (something your MRI or CT scan would show), decompression can lower the pressure inside the disc. This negative pressure may then draw or suck the displaced disc material more towards the center of the disc and away from your nerves. For many patients this can mean pain relief because a compressed nerve is a painful nerve. If the pressure on the nerve is released, it can begin to heal. Spinal Decompression is designed to assist the body's natural tendency to heal itself because Mother Nature sometimes needs a little help. If the disc can be moved even a small amount away from the nerve, this can be enough to decrease inflammation and irritation. We need more studies to fully understand why patients can improve when they receive this type of treatment and which types of disc problems respond the most.
Chemotherapy
Acupuncture’s clinical results are attracting interest from mainstream medicine. A panel of independent experts convened in 1997 by the National Institutes of Health concluded that acupuncture is safe and effective in treating nausea and pain due to cancer and chemotherapy drugs. It is also shown to be as helpful as prescription medication in treating post surgical and other forms of pain, and without the harmful side effects and toxicity. In our practices, we routinely see excellent long-term results with acupuncture, even when other forms of treatment have failed.

Orthopedics
Dr. Ezgur earned his Doctor of Chiropractic (DC) degree from the National University of Health Sciences, or NUHS, (formerly the National College of Chiropractic) in Lombard, Illinois. While enrolled at NUHS, he attended over 450 hours of seminars on topics including orthopedics, sports injuries, rehabilitation, acupuncture, and nutrition. During his internship, Dr. Ezgur completed rotations at Edgewater Hospital, NUHS, and Salvation Army Clinics. Since graduating, Dr. Ezgur has trained extensively with Dr. Andre Saine and the Canadian Academy of Homeopathy completing a four-year, 500-hour advanced post-graduate course leading to the FCAH status (Fellow of the Canadian Academy of Homeopathy). He also completed a three-year postdoctoral program through the Los Angeles College of Chiropractic, leading to board-certification in chiropractic sports medicine rehabilitation. He has continued to attend chiropractic, sports medicine, physical therapy, and homeopathy seminars around the world.

Pinched Nerve
Most people are unaware that a chiropractor can treat conditions away from the spine, but a good chiropractor can be helpful in treating many other areas of the body. The bones in the ankles and knees typically move from their normal alignment during an auto accident because of their awkward positioning or impact with the car. In many situations, the bones in the back and hips can also shift and cause a pinched nerve, which can create shooting pains from the buttocks to the feet. This is where a chiropractor can help. A chiropractic adjustment can be very effective when treating ankle and knee injuries that originate from the spine based on their understanding and education of the bone, nerve, and muscle structures in the body.

Frostbite
If the sensations become too intense or unbearable, then just pause the massage for a few seconds, and then resume again. You can interrupt the massage as many times as you need to in order to complete the process, ultimately reaching the numb phase. To avoid frostbite, it is very important that you stop the massage as soon as the area stops aching, and feels relatively numb. You’ve reached the numb stage when the ice no longer feels extremely cold anymore. If for some reason you fail to reach the numb stage, discontinue the massage after 5 minutes. Do not use this technique on broken skin.
Ulcer
Every tissue, organ, and cell in your body is under the control of your central nervous system, or “CNS”. Because pain signals traveling along irritated nerves directly affects the CNS, the pain signals caused by a joint misalignment can have far reaching effects throughout the body. For example, your lungs and digestive organs are controlled in part by the spinal nerves in the thoracic region of your spine. If these nerves are irritated by joint restrictions or misalignments in this part of your body, your lung function may become affected which can mimic or contribute to symptoms of asthma, reflux disease, or stomach ulcer. Similarly, joint dysfunction in the cervical spine can mimic or contribute to symptoms of headache, ear infection, vertigo, allergies, or sinusitis.

It is based on the scientific fact that your body is under the control of your brain, spinal cord, and nervous system. Dr. Ezgur is a trained instructor of the American Red Cross “Protect Your Back" program, and of the American Cancer Society “Fresh Start" stop smoking program. Before your first visit, we will call your insurance company to obtain a very detailed verification of your benefits. By doing this, we will know in advance exactly what is covered and what is not, minimizing any unexpected “surprises” from your insurance company. Whether we are in or out-of-network with your particular insurance plan, we will bill your insurance claims for you and await payment from your insurance company. You will only be charged initially for your co-pay, deductible, or the percentage of your share of your services provided.

If you suspect that you are suffering from a muscle-related pain or condition, a chiropractic physician is an ideal first healthcare practitioner to consult. While massage therapy alone can be beneficial, faster relief and longer-lasting results are typically achieved by utilizing a more comprehensive treatment approach which may include some combination of the following: chiropractic adjustments, ART (active release therapy), Graston Technique, physical therapy techniques, acupuncture, cold laser therapy, and homeopathy & natural medicine. There are many types of muscular and myofascial conditions, as well as other serious diseases and nutritional disorders that can mimic muscle-related problems. One of the most common is myofascial pain syndrome caused by trigger points. These trigger points, commonly referred to as “knots”, are focal areas of increased muscle tension which can cause local or referred pain, weakness, numbness, tingling, and “pins & needles” sensations. Sometimes muscular pain is the direct result of injury to the muscle, as in the case of a muscle pull, tear, or rupture. Other times, tendinitis or tendinosis may develop when the muscular attachment to the bone (called the “tendon”) becomes strained or inflamed from a specific injury, or as the result of repetitive strain. Examples of repetitive strain to the muscle or tendon include prolonged and/or poor sitting postures, repetitive motions, and improper lifting. Another muscle-related condition is called muscle imbalance, in which specific groups of muscles become weak and/or inhibited while their related counterparts (antagonist muscles) are tight and/or overactive. This muscle imbalance commonly leads to poor muscle function & athletic performance, joint instability, and pain. Other muscle-related conditions include fibromyalgia, tension headaches, tennis elbow, golfer’s elbow, rotator cuff syndrome, iliotibial band (ITB) syndrome, and muscular & myofascial adhesions. Most people don’t realize that by the time they actually feel muscular pain, the surrounding joints and nerves have also become affected. This is why the care we offer is so effective in treating muscular pain: because it is comprehensive care that addresses not only the muscles, but also the wide range of underlying causes including spinal & extremity joint misalignments & restrictions, nerve problems, and dietary and lifestyle contributing factors.

In 1999, Bronfort conducted a systematic review of literature concerning the efficacy of chiropractic for low-back pain. He found that spinal manipulative therapy has a short-term effect in cases of acute low-back pain.Compared with placebo and other commonly used therapies by general medical practitioners, spinal manipulation and mobilization are also effective for chronic low-back pain.
