Being from the East coast, there was only one type of pizza that I loved: thin crust. Any other version should be considered illegal. However, I was open to trying out Chicago's beloved deep dish pizza. It was a sacrifice I was willing to make. My boyfriend took me to one of his favorite deep dish pizza locations, Lou Malnati. It was in a nice suburban location away from the city. They had a small, private lot however they had an extension on the side for their busier days.
I went straight to the Deep Dish Pizza section of their menu.
Once we walked into the building, they had a few floors but they sat us on the first floor by the windows perfect for a sunny Sunday afternoon. I have been waiting so long to try Chicago's deep dish pizza so I was excited when I got their menu and flipped towards that section. The Malnati Chicago Classic was the obvious choice to pick with a little bit of everything: sauce, cheese and the sausage! When we spoke with the waiter she had mentioned the personal might be smaller than what we had expected so we both went with the small. Little did we know that the small was enormous more than enough for two people.
Since the thin crust pizza was easy to maneuver, I was surprised when Kevin had picked up his fork and knife...to eat the pizza. At first, I fought the idea and picked the slice up and realized there's way too much cheese inside to navigate this. The fork and knife was the way to go until the cheese had somewhat hardened. Then it was much easier to hold on to the crust and eat it. Their buttery crust gave it a nice sturdy crust to support the contents inside. You can tell from trying the sauce it wash homemade. If only they bottled their tomato sauce...if only. Then there was a sausage layer followed by the amazing layer of cheese. It looks overwhelming at first but you realize the necessity since it had to be proportional to the other layers.
As much as we thought we could finish the entire pie, we were unsuccessful in our attempt. Luckily, they boxed it up so we could enjoy them later. Since their pizza is amazing, you can get their pizza shipped to your door (link below)! When I'm craving their pizza, I know exactly what to do to satisfy that craving.

First things first when in Chicago - deep dish. Came to Lou's and couldn't be happier. The pizza came out piping hot and was delicious to the last drop. I've been craving it ever since.

So good! The Lou is where it's at! Makes me wish I lived in Chicago!! Service was great and the only drawback is that a beauty like that pizza takes a half hour to make. But it's worth the wait!

- About Lou Malnati's Pizzeria Considered the oldest family name in Chicago pizza, Lou Malnati's is as rich in history as its pizza is in flavor. Lou Malnati got his start in the 1940's working in Chicago's first deep dish pizzeria. He took his pizza expertise to Lincolnwood, a northern suburb of Chicago, where he and his wife Jean opened the first Lou Malnati's Pizzeria on March 17, 1971. Lou was known for his fun-loving character as well as making Chicago's best pizza. Loyal patrons lined the streets on opening day for a taste of his delicious deep dish creations. Lou always thought it was funny that an Italian should open a pizzeria in a Jewish neighborhood on an Irish holiday.
