Parasites Treatment and Control
Although we deworm your new pet it is not uncommon for puppies to carry coccidia and giardia that can be passed on to other dogs and cats. Giardia is also contagious to humans. These parasites are not killed by standard deworming medication and require different medications to treat. So, it is important to perform a fecal analysis even though deworming medication is given.

Upper Respiratory Illness Treatment
Series of HCP vaccinations given every 3-4 weeks. This vaccination protects kittens from panleukopenia, a parvovirus that is deadly in cats as well as calicivirus (an upper respiratory disease) and rhinotracheitis (feline herpes).

Infection Treatment

Leptospirosis Treatment
Series of two Leptospirosis vaccines to protect a common bacterial disease that causes acute and usually fatal kidney and liver failure. This disease can be passed to humans.
Parvovirus Infection Treatment
P = Parvovirus. This is an often deadly gastrointestinal disease that causes diarrhea, vomiting, depression, and even death in dogs of all ages.
Feline Retro Virus Treatment
Three drops of blood and a rapid “SNAP” test allow us to screen your new kitten for both feline leukemia (FeLV) and feline immunodeficiency virus (FIV). Patients infected by these viruses do not display symptoms of these diseases until they are in the end stage of the disease so it is important to screen them.

These conditions will start to become more prevalent as your pet gets older. For this reason, we recommend twice-yearly veterinary visits for pets over 7 years of age. Your aging pet may be showing early signs of osteoarthritis such as stiffness after rest or play, difficulty going up or downstairs, and reduced activity. Early intervention with joint supplements and prescription arthritis medications when indicated, along with modified nutrition and exercise plans, can greatly improve your pet’s comfort and mobility. Likewise, performing annual screening lab work on your older pet can help identify early stages of medical problems that might go unrecognized, and progress significantly without treatment.

Heartworm is another important endoparasite, but one which is not zoonotic. Heartworm infections result from pets being bitten by infected mosquitos. The larval form of the heartworm travels through the bloodstream to the heart where it develops into an adult. The adult heartworms live in the right side of the heart and left untreated, result in progressive heart failure and death. In initial stages of heartworm disease, pets may be asymptomatic. As the condition progresses, symptoms may evolve including a cough and exercise intolerance in dogs, and vomiting/coughing in cats. Treatment of heartworm disease can be very risky for the pet, and very costly.

Maintaining the health of your senior pet also consists of preventative dental care to help avert periodontal disease from affecting the heart, liver, and kidneys. More than 85% of dogs and cats over four years old have some form of periodontal disease, an inflammatory condition in which bacteria attacks the gums, ligament, and bone tissues that surround and support the teeth. These bacteria not only can cause tooth loss, decay, and bad breath, but also can travel through the bloodstream and damage vital organs

Dental Surgery
Most dental disease occurs below the gum line where you can’t see it without the use of radiographs. We highly recommend full mouth radiographs for all pets in order to fully evaluate the health of their jaw and tooth roots below the gum line. Radiographs allow the doctor to better determine the health and structure of each tooth and can confirm the necessity for extraction of a tooth that may be loose, damaged, or severely diseased. Complicated or surgical extractions require the use of dental radiographs.

Spaying and Neutering
The therapeutic goals for cryptorchid dogs are all best accomplished by castration and removal of both testicles, whether they are retained or in the proper anatomical location. There is anecdotal evidence that certain medical “therapies,” such as hormone injections, may stimulate descent of retained testicles in puppies treated before 4 months of age, although this has not been proven. The ethics of such techniques are highly questionable given the genetic component of this disorder. Most breeders agree that cryptorchid dogs should not be considered candidates for breeding. Their fathers, male siblings and any male offspring have an increased chance of being genetic carriers of the condition, even if they do not have it themselves.
