Ophthalmology
Dr. Diehl is a 2006 graduate of the Pennsylvania College of Optometry in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Dr. Diehl completed several externships in Philadelphia, including experiences with the Ophthalmology Department at Albert Einstein Medical Center and the pediatric unit of the Eye Institute in Philadelphia. He joined Dr. Whitling in July 2006 and became sole owner of Clarion Eye Care, Inc. in July 2016. He is a member of the American Optometric Association, the Pennsylvania Optometric Association & Gold Key International Optometric Honor Society. He enjoys working with people of all ages but finds it particularly rewarding when working with children.
Macular Degeneration
Our Daytona can also utilize a relatively new non-invasive technique called autofluorescence (AF). AF was developed over the last decade to study the fluorescent properties of lipofuscin, which is a mixture of autofluorescent pigments that accumulate in the retinal pigment epithelium (RPE) as a byproduct from the incomplete degradation of photoreceptor outer segments within the retina. AF imaging gives information over and above conventional imaging techniques such as fundus photos or fluorescein angiography as it allows visualization of the metabolic changes at the level of the RPE and helps to identify areas that may be at high risk for the development of geographic atrophy or choroidal neovascular membranes. This is especially helpful when looking for progression of Macular Degeneration.
Laser Eye Surgery
LASIK (Laser In Situ Keratomileusis) is a surgical method of correcting a broad range of nearsightedness, astigmatism, and farsightedness. It is an outpatient procedure that takes about 15 minutes to perform. During LASIK, a corneal flap is first produced. This is temporarily folded back and the laser is applied to the inner layers of the cornea to reshape it. The flap is then closed and it heals naturally and securely. This procedure can allow patients to reduce their dependence on glasses or contact lenses and in some cases eliminate the need for them.

Eye Exam
As many as one in four school-age children have vision problems. Vision problems not diagnosed and treated have a negative impact on learning. Vision problems with the potential to impact learning include skills related to sustained reading. Problems with eye movement control, eye focusing or accommodation, and eye teaming or binocularity can affect efficiency of learning despite a child having 20/20 vision. Although the most prevalent eye problem in children is refractive errors that affect visual acuity, there are additional skills important for visual information acquisition. The examination of children for eye and vision problems should therefore include all visual functions of acuity, binocularity, eye motility and focusing, and ocular health, including neurodevelopmental and congenital eye abnormalities. The identification of all eye and vision problems a child may have can only be through a comprehensive eye examination, not a vision screening. Due to the importance of early identification and therefore treatment of eye and vision problems, the American Optometric Association recommends all children receive their first eye examination before the age of one year. National estimates suggest a rate of vision screening between a low of 2 percent to a high of 64 percent, and vision screenings are only able to identify 27 percent of the children who actually have vision problems. Furthermore, the data showing the proportion of these children who fail the vision screening and subsequently receive comprehensive vision care and treatment of vision problems is uncertain.
