Brown & Connery recognizes that New Jersey employers face a unique set of legal challenges. As part of our representation of employers, starting in 2008, we began to develop a workers’ compensation defense practice focusing on New Jersey public and private employers. In 2016, our workers’ compensation defense practice group substantially expanded with the addition of the law firm of Freeman Huber Sacks Brennan & Fingerman. The Freeman firm has been engaged in the defense of workers’ compensation matters for employers since 1950 and provides a deep knowledge and years of experience in this area. Brown & Connery represents major insurance carriers and self-insured employers, as well as various public entities throughout the State of New Jersey including New Jersey Transit, Camden County, the City of Camden, New Jersey School Insurance Group and the South Jersey Transportation Authority. Three of the practice area attorneys are certified by the New Jersey Supreme Court as Certified Workers’ Compensation Law Attorneys. Wrongful Termination
Brown & Connery has a team of experienced attorneys in its labor and employment practice who represent employers and individual employees in litigation related to claims of sexual harassment, discrimination, hostile work environment, retaliation and other claims of wrongful termination. The firm’s attorneys are experienced in handling matters related to all federal and state laws including the New Jersey Law Against Discrimination, Title VII, Section 1983, the Americans with Disabilities Act, the Conscientious Employee Protection Act, the Age Discrimination in Employment Act, the Family and Medical Leave Act, the New Jersey Family Leave Act and the Pregnancy Discrimination Act.
At Brown & Connery, we have an extensive real estate and land use practice that includes both transactions and litigation. Our firm represents sellers, buyers and developers of commercial properties in real estate transactions. Recent projects include representation of Bergstol Enterprises Inc. in the development of the Pine Hill National Golf Course located in Pine Hill, New Jersey.
Easement
Land Use and Zoning
With respect to land use issues, we represent applicants in planning and zoning matters before local boards throughout New Jersey. Currently, the firm acts as a solicitor for various local planning boards.
At Brown & Connery, we also provide estate administration services for every step in the administration process, from qualification of the personal representative to the closing of the estate. We assist the personal representative in the collection, appraisal, liquidation, and distribution of assets; prepare the necessary federal and state estate tax returns, state inheritance tax returns, and the federal and state fiduciary income tax returns. Our attorneys also advise clients on the advantages of tax elections, disclaimers, and other post-mortem estate planning devices. We represent clients in tax controversies, including audits of federal and state estate, inheritance, and fiduciary income tax returns.
Wills
Brown & Connery’s attorneys handle all aspects of probate litigation, including the representation of executors, trustees, and beneficiaries in will contests, will interpretation cases, and fiduciary matters.
Power of Attorney
The firm also provides counsel and advice on issues pertaining to the rights and care of patients, and the exposure of health care organizations and providers in the area of informed consent. The firm has considerable experience in developing internal policies, procedures and guidelines for health care providers in areas, including termination of life support systems, advance directives and powers of attorney, the physician-patient relationship, access to medical records, consent forms for general admission and medical procedures, and refusal of medical treatment.
The firm’s creditors’ rights practice also includes commercial and residential foreclosure actions for regional and national lenders, financing companies, business entities and individuals. This practice area also handles replevin matters, foreclosure of security interests in personal property, enforcement of pledge agreements, negotiation of agreements for forbearance, deeds in lieu of foreclosure and related workout agreements, and counseling of creditor clients prior to commencement of litigation.
Tax Law
Notable condemnation projects include representation of the Camden County Municipal Utilities Authority in its acquisition of over 200 easement and fee takings and the taking for the Borough of Collingswood of an 84 unit apartment complex as part of a redevelopment project. The firm has prosecuted real estate tax appeals at the County Board of Taxation and the Tax Court levels for such clients as General Electric, Lockheed Martin and Underwood-Memorial Hospital.
