During that time he assisted with multiple research projects including a trial on an artificial blood substitute, All Terrain Vehicle accidents involving children, and an educational program to teach surgical residents the use of ultrasound in the assessment of trauma victims.

Dr. Huddleston enjoys practicing the full spectrum of general surgery, with special interest in advanced laparoscopic cases, bariatric and metabolic surgery.
Minimally Invasive Surgery
The da Vinci surgical system gives your surgeon an advanced set of instruments to use in performing robotic-assisted minimally invasive surgery. Your surgeon performs surgery with da Vinci by using instruments that he or she guides via a console. The da Vinci system translates your surgeon’s hand movements at the console in real time, bending and rotating the instruments while performing the procedure. The da Vinci vision system also delivers highly magnified, 3D high-definition views of the surgical area. The instrument size makes it possible for surgeons to operate through one or a few small incisions.

Dr. Copeland has been involved in many aspects of surgical care in Cookeville and at Cookeville Regional Medical Center. He initiated and developed the peripheral vascular surgery program at CRMC beginning in 1994. He has served as the cancer liaison physician fro CRMC’s cancer program since its inception. He has served on several hospital committees including chairman of the Department of Surgery and as a member of the Medical Staff Executive Committee. He currently serves as the Surgeon Champion for CRMC and its participation in the National Surgical Quality Improvement Project.

Laparoscopic Surgery
Laparoscopic surgery is a more technical procedure that requires additional training and skill. Laparoscopic surgery consists of making several small incisions in the abdominal wall. The tip of a Laparoscope, a long flexible tube connected to a video camera, is inserted into one of the incisions. Through the other incisions, the surgeon will insert other special instruments, and using a video monitor, will guide these instruments to hold, cut, suture or staple inside the body. Once the surgery is completed, these small incisions are sutured closed.
